Cassandra: And they all fall down Page 19

by Julie Hodgson

“That’s exactly what he said, my love. Case closed.” Ellen locked Cassandra in a stare as she said this. It was far from telepathic, but she was delivering a clear message to her daughter. It’s over. Barnsley isn’t saying a word and neither should we.

“Nutcase if you ask me,” Dad quipped. “Turns out that he was attacked by his own creature.” He fell into thought for a moment. “I don’t understand how you can make a creature, though. It just doesn’t make sense. Does it make sense to you, love?” he asked his wife.

Ellen shrugged as if the conversation was boring her and then Cassandra held her glass out to him.

“More?” he asked, and she nodded gratefully.

John’s exit was easier this time. His daughter was looking a little more like her old self, and he didn’t need to fall over the furniture while he kept her in his eye line. When he returned, it was with a glass of water in his hand and a massive smile on his face. “There you go, love,” he said but didn’t sit down. “I have some great news for you, Cass.”

Cassandra looked up at him and saw he was bursting with excitement. She couldn’t imagine what he could be so happy about.

“I’ve just seen a nurse outside, and there’s great news. Bindi’s just woken up, and she’s asking to see. She’s going to be alright,”

Cassandra shifted slightly on her pillow… She smiled. Things were going to be different from now on… Very different.

  Prologue

Samantha had always felt she was different, with the incessant itching on the backs of her hands drove her mad. But her parents always said it was nothing. She would be fine. The cream would help… A new town, a new start, they said… Probably due the fact that she was conceived through IVF. They said, that was the reason. Always some reason…

Nearly sixteen, she was getting ready a new school day… She always ran in the morning, several miles in fact… Her blond hair and blue eyes sharp as a button…

Turning a corner, she bumped into a girl…

  “oops sorry” Sam said…

  “No worries “said Cassandra.

And they stared at each other…….Their two faces, identical, right down to the very last freckle!!
