“We are all safe,” Nimue confirmed. “Hell is holding steady, and thanks to the raised consciousness among humans, it’s not filling up as fast. We’ve got a lot more time to help the souls process their pain and guilt.”
“And we have a lot more help,” Zel chipped in, grinning. “The archangels and the rest of the Heavenly Host are devoting all their time to helping with the souls. They’ve finally seen the light, too.”
“Everything’s changed,” I breathed out. I couldn’t believe it. It was like my wildest dream come true. “Everything is better.”
“Er, not everything,” Dale blurted out.
Alex gave him a sharp look. “Could you let her not worry for five minutes?”
“What is it?” I said sharply.
Dale grimaced. “We can’t get Clover back.”
“What?”
“She won’t - or can’t - come back. We don’t know which.”
I groaned aloud. “I thought she’d be the one person who would be safe. And you’re telling me she’s in danger?” I elbowed Alex in the ribs. “You said that your friend Drake would look after her.”
“Er, he’s had some trouble…” To my surprise, he started laughing. I glared at him until he went on. “It seems Drake has fallen head over heels in love with Clover. He’s a vampire prince, you know, and he’s not used to being thwarted.”
“He’s holding her hostage?” My voice was shrill.
Alex chuckled. “No. He’s too indebted to Nimue and me to do that. He is, however, in love with her, and determined to make her his Queen. But-”
I held up my finger. “Let me guess. She won’t be tied down.”
Alex laughed again. “While she’s returning his affections, he is having some difficulty with the fact that she is also having affections with every single other vampire in their Realm, male and female. Apparently, she is being hailed as a goddess.”
I inhaled sharply. “Why does that not surprise me?” I furrowed my brow. “I guess we’ll have to do something about it when something needs to be done.”
“We’ll have to cover her shifts, Eve,” Dale said to me.
“Dale.” I shook my head. “Can you see this tiny human in my arms?”
He giggled. “I forgot. I guess we’ll have to get Martin to recruit.”
I snuggled my baby closer and breathed in her delicious creme brulee scent. She’d stopped feeding, and she was now fast asleep, her little lips squished up against my boob. I gently readjusted her so I could see her whole face.
She was just beautiful. The most beautiful thing I’d ever seen before in my life. They say that life is all about living in the moment, and in this moment, everything was absolutely perfect. I had Alex, my lover, and Nate, my friend and teacher, both fathers to my baby. They would be with me forever. Margot, my human protector and most beloved blood relation, was snoring in an armchair in the corner. Dale and Zel grinned at me, with little Metatron in the middle of the bed, his dark eyes shining with happiness, A holy trinity of crazy uncles. Malach and Nimue by the door, holding each other together as if they were two parts of a whole. They were the perfect grandparents.
It was perfect, this life. It hadn’t started off this way. I also believed there would be trouble to come. But life was about living in the now. And I was going to savor this moment.
Because it was perfect.
