Out of the Shadows Page 21

by Raven Darkwing

She wore her long black hair loosely about her shoulders. Her kaftan was made of white cotton that flowed about her form like the air. The neckline was embellished with a design made of gold threads that matched the long-woven rope belt she wore around her waist. Her golden sandaled feet made no sound as she approached.

“Can’t I just stop by to see how my granddaughters fair?” Gaea asked. She chuckled at the eye roll she received. Those who thought of the Moirai as three grizzled old women would be shocked to see her granddaughters. They lived their own lives while still providing the path for every being except for the original three gods. Of course, a person’s path could branch into different roads based on the free will of those involved. But fate still played a powerful role.

Lachesis cocked her head to the side. “You wish to know if the journey changed from what my sisters and I have seen of the future?” She moved to sit in one of the chairs beside the quiet pool. Gaea took the seat beside her. She gazed into the pool for a moment before she glanced at the woman beside her.

  “Has it?” Gaea prodded gently.

Her granddaughter shook her head sadly. “While some gains have been made, my sister Atropos still sees nothing but darkness in our future. Though she cannot state when it will happen, just that we are in a time where a single decision by the chosen could doom us all.”

Gaea sighed. “We dare not interfere too much either. It was such interference that has placed us in this predicament. Yet, I sense you have had a hand in pushing a few of our children closer to their true fate.”

Lachesis chuckled. “I admit to letting your brother Eros have some fun. Although, I believe his chosen oracle would have given the same advice without being prompted. You must admit it has been fun watching the one called Blaze as he advised the love-torn mates. It wouldn’t surprise me if he became a hermit after Eros sent all of them to his attention.”

Gaea had to admit; her brother seemed to enjoy playing Cupid for those who searched for true love. She chuckled at the imagine of the larger than life god of love as a small cherub who floated around with a bow and arrow. In fact, he looked every bit the Greek god of old. But his heart was usually in the right place. “Have you given him his next assignment?” Gaea asked.

While Lachesis was the one to see the golden threads that fell between fated mates, it was up to Eros to try to provide the gentle push to those meant to be together. He could not force the issue because everyone knew, love could never be coerced. It was this last issue that sometimes made her brother’s task seem impossible. Yet, lately, he had been successful in bringing some of the key players in the war to come together.

Her granddaughter sighed. “I have told him but fear his task will be a difficult one. Luckily, our foe inadvertently has made it a little easier by using the dark elves to do their bidding. This action has changed the path of two of your champions. Time will tell if they decide to take the path or to ignore their true fate.”

“Which would set us back,” Gaea finished. She stood and gazed outside the entrance to the cave. “It is strange. Free will is what allowed me and my siblings to escape the darkness of Chaos, and it may be free will that sends all we’ve created back to his realm.”

Lachesis stood and placed her arm around her grandmother’s shoulder. “You know the way fate works, the only certainty is birth and death. If those remain a constant, the realm of light you created will survive.”

Gaea smiled softly, “You are right. I have to believe the mistake made in the past will not destroy the future of what has been created in the light. Otherwise, all will be lost. Tell your sisters of my love. I will try to stop by more often.”

Lachesis chuckled. “Well, we won’t hold our breath. As the mother of all things, we understand your time is filled with duty. We will contact you should there be any news.”

Gaea hugged her granddaughter. She walked slowly from their home into the light. As she headed to check on her children in the fae realm, she felt a sudden chill run up her spine. Something was not right. There was a darkness in the realm that had not been there before. It might be time for her to give another gentle push to those who helped her maintain the light. It was time for her to visit her oracle in that realm before the darkness could grow.
