He eyed me across the room. A trace of a smile tugged at his lips. “And what cover story should that be?”
“I don’t know.” I couldn’t help but blush when he looked at me with that wild glint in his eyes. “Maybe we could tell them that you’re a cousin of the twins’ and that you came to stay with them.”
“That would not go over very well, Rosie, since I have a Kentish accent. The first question people would ask is what my family name is and the jig would be up.”
I held up both hands. “Okay. What about we tell them I found you washed up on the seashore and you’d lost your memory in a terrible shipwreck?”
He laughed. “That’s getting closer. The only problem is there is no seashore around here. It’s all cliffs.”
I reclined back. “You’re not making this any easier.”
He took a few steps toward me. “I like the ‘lost his memory’ tale. That provides some plausible deniability.”
I found myself gazing up at him from below. That view of him always took my breath away. I needed to reach out and touch him. I needed to express my bottomless desire for him. My guts ached with molten fire.
He didn’t notice—or maybe he did. “We should contact William and the twins. We should let them know I’m staying here so they don’t worry.”
“Not yet.” Did my voice really sound so breathless and hungry? Did he hear?
I pitched forward on my knees and wrapped my arms around his waist. I never thought giving in to my emotions would make me so vulnerable, so tremulous, so sensitive to every twitch of his features.
Tilting my head back to make eye contact with him took all my strength. His fierce gaze drilled down to the depths of my soul and left nothing hidden.
His hand drifted to my cheek. I cradled my heart in that tender palm. I turned my lips into it and kissed it.
“Do you want this, Rosie?” he murmured. “Do you really want me here?”
I couldn’t open my eyes. Crushing desperation for him obliterated all else. “More than anything. I can’t stand you not being here. I never want you to leave.”
His other hand closed around my head. His fingers slipped into my hair and I rested my face against his stomach in matchless surrender. I didn’t have to hide anymore—from him, from myself, from what this all meant. I was here. He was here. We would stay here like this, forever.
