It was by this Treaty of London, which in 1914 the German chancellor, Theobald von Bethmann Hollweg, dismissed as ‘a scrap of paper’, that Britain went to war upon the invasion of Belgium by German troops.
fn1 Bylandt was blamed, and recalled on 24 November. He subsequently published several pamphlets protesting his ‘innocence’, but never again held active command, retiring from the service in 1840, though he was promoted to lieutenant-general in 1843 after the crown prince had succeeded to the throne, largely in recognition of his service at Waterloo.
