“The only thing left is the toll.” The old man stood up straighter, all traces of good humor gone, white eyebrows raised expectantly.

“I brought cake.” No one had told her about a toll. Had he let them both come all this way, only to keep them here?

“This is going to take more than cake, child.”

  “I’ll stay. Will that work?”

“Manuel, no.” Bethany reached for Emmanuel’s hand, but he slipped away, going to stand beside the older man, expectation and excitement on his face.

“You would do the trick.” He tapped his pants thoughtfully with his straw hat. “You think you’re ready for what’s down the road?”

  “What is down the road?”

“You know what they say about many mansions. Now go wait for me by the corner while I finish up here.”

Emmanuel ran back to Bethany, hugging her so tightly she lost her breath, but before she could return the favor, he was gone again. Sprinting toward the crossroads.

“You’ve been a good mentor to me, Legba. A good friend. I thank you and Ghede for the chance. For all of it.”

Bone Daddy laid a hand on her shoulder and she gasped at his touch.

  BD.

“Yeah? Well, you’ve been a bit of a troublemaker, but I always liked that about you. Take care of yourself, and don’t go being a hero. We may not be around the next time to save the day. Live a long life. Have babies. Be happy.” Papa Legba winked at her and then he was gone.

  All of it was gone.

She was back on her side of the gate, and she could still feel BD beside her.

  She hoped.

“Are you going to turn around and look at me?”

“Yes.” She inhaled shakily. “Well, I’m working up to it.”

“I’ll be here whenever you’re ready. Poor Blue Eyes, you’ll never get rid of me now.”

Thank God, Papa Legba and The Mamas for that, she thought, turning to wrap her arms around the man she’d always loved. “I’m going to need that in writing.”

  Chapter 10

  “I thought I told you I wasn’t going anywhere.”

  “I’m not taking any chances.”

“But, Bethany, if you leave me like this, how can I bring you pleasure?”

She stood at the foot of the bed, smiling in satisfaction at her handiwork. She’d used some of the silk shawls leftover from last week’s celebration to tie him to the four-poster bed. Naked.

She licked her lips. “You’re bringing me pleasure right now, BD. Trust me.”

They’d come back to the old mansion and, after Michelle and the others had welcomed them home, they’d graciously faded into the woodwork to give the reunited couple some quality time alone.

Food had been set outside their door along with clean clothes and towels, but other than that, they were left to their own devices.

They hadn’t left the bed in days, though most of their time had been spent talking. About who they’d been to each other before, about what they’d been through since they were parted.

BD held her as she spoke about her loneliness. Her aunt’s distance. Her difficulty trusting other people. It was clear Isabel had affected certain aspects of her current personality. All anyone had ever seen when they’d looked at Isabel was her beauty. Until Marcel, who’d surpassed her in attractiveness, and understood what it felt like to be underestimated and objectified. Bethany’s rejection of everything related to her aunt’s focus on outward appearance made even more sense to her now.

They talked about his life as a Loa, but she’d admitted there were some things she didn’t need to know. As far as she was concerned, the Love Doctor had closed his practice to take care of a single patient. Her.

When they’d opened the locket together, the small paintings inside had given her a start. Opposite the miniature image of Marcel was a girl who looked exactly like Bethany. A little younger, her Spanish and French heritage showing in her light olive skin tone, but other than that, they were identical. The same lips and eyes. It was hard to reconcile plain Bethany with this sought-after belle of the ball.

“You are beautiful, Bethany. You are timeless.”

He remembered everything now, the final gift the Loa had given him, but he still wasn’t comfortable being called Marcel. “It was another life. I was a different man. I think I’ll be BD for a while. It’s what everyone calls me anyway.”

She could still see Marcel inside him. It was there in his desire to take care of her. To spoil her. But there was a confidence, a soul-deep strength that emanated from him now that was all Bone Daddy. Both aspects were irresistible.

He whistled, regaining her attention. “Come on, love. Don’t make me beg.”

“As if you would,” she huffed, climbing on top of him and leaning forward to place a soft, teasing kiss on his lips.

“You know I would, Blue Eyes. But only for you.”

She sat back, her fingers tracing the scar that curved around his side and stomach, a reminder of the pain-filled past. “Do you think Emmanuel is all right?”

“Emmanuel is better than fine. He’s free. We were both waiting for you, Bethany. Each in our own way. Now that he knows you’re safe, he’s no longer trapped in the past, stuck in the last moments of his childhood and only seen if someone like Michelle happened to cross his path. And who knows, maybe he’ll get another chance at life as well.”

“I read a book about reincarnation while you were sleeping. It said there are these things called soul groups, and you all keep coming back together, learning life les—”

  “Bethany.” His voice was stern.

  “Yes, BD?”

“You have a sex slave tied to your bed, naked and hard for you. Are you sure you want to talk about books right now? If so, we may need to go downstairs and join the others for dinner. I wouldn’t want you getting tired of me already.”

She never would. She could feel his erection hot against her, and all at once, she didn’t think books were all that interesting. Overrated, really.

“We’ll see them tomorrow,” she murmured, her hand slipping between them and making him moan. “You have to talk to Ben about that double wedding we’re having.”

His hips lifted off the bed impatiently as she tightened her grip. “Yes. Yes, I do. Not to mention a birth certificate and social security number.” He gasped, straining against her. “I had no idea being human came with so much paperwork.”

She took him inside her, both of them groaning as they came together. “Are you sure you want to talk about paperwork right now?”

He shook his head, his amber eyes hooded and dilated with arousal. “No. I want you to ride me again.”

  “Work. Work. Work.”
