He didn’t make any attempt to do that.
In the meantime, metal scraped metal with sparks flying as the three SUVs violently rubbed together.
Then it happened; with a complete lock on the black vehicle, the three vehicles pushed ahead. Once they passed, Joe made his move.
He swerved sharply to the right aiming for the airport exit, but he was driving too fast. There wasn’t any way he could make that exit.
“Jesus! Joe. You can’t make it,” I yelled.
Joe slammed on brakes just before hitting the yellow impact barrels situated at the gore point. We hit it head on.
I was fixated on the three vehicles ahead of us. At the last millisecond, I saw the yellow barrels looming ahead.
There’s no way out of this.
The car slammed viciously headlong into the neon-yellow Fitch barrels, causing them to rupture, separate and reveal the protected gore point.
The sound of metal hitting concrete screeched through the night as the hood of the LTD crushed and tore from the impact. Then, the car bounced back violently like an unwound spring. We were thrown forward and then back again, first slamming into the dashboard, and then against the seat rests.
The last thing I remembered, the LTD came to a final dead stop as it quivered and shook one last time before completely dying. A few seconds later, the airbags deployed; exploding at nearly a hundred miles an hour as they exited their compartments.
That impact was the last thing I felt.
The car filled with white dust and chemicals bits that were part of the deployment mechanism. The other FBI agents forced the black SUV between them onto the next exit ramp about a half mile down the road, and at gunpoint, forced the driver and passenger to exit their vehicle.
The agents cuffed them and put them in the backseat of one of the blue SUVs. When they looked back at the wreckage, an ambulance had arrived.
“Looks like they missed their flight,” the driver of the black SUV dryly commented.
