Brian laughed. “Bunch of perverts.” He dismissed his co-workers, focusing only on her. “You have Saturday off, right? So I promised my niece I’d watch her soccer game—you can bring a flask and heckle the other team if you want, that’s always fun—but afterward I was thinking ice cream and Netflix. If you’re a good girl, I might even let you lick chocolate syrup off me.”

“What?” She hadn’t thought past this moment.

“I’m only partially joking about getting drunk and yelling at kids. You don’t have to get drunk.”

  “Are you planning our Saturday?”

“Sorry, was there something else you wanted to do?”

  “We’re spending the day together?”

“I’ve heard that’s what boyfriends and girlfriends do.”

“I don’t know how this works,” she said, suddenly overwhelmed. She didn’t know how to be someone’s girlfriend. She didn’t realize she was wringing her hands together until he took one of them in his own.

  “Breathe.”

“You’re my boyfriend?” She hung on to his hand and then laced their fingers together. It looked right. “How do we do this?”

“There’s no test, no right answer, no one true path,” he said. “Just be here now. That’s all. We’ll figure the rest out together.”

Be here now. She could do this. She went up on her tiptoes and pulled his head down to hers.

Priya kissed him in this moment and took the leap of faith that the next moment would work itself out as long as they were together.
