“I’ll have to go in again for an award, Lee thinks. But I’ll be back,” Sis told him.
“In ten minutes?”
She laughed. “You said, ‘Come back in ten months.’” But she suspected the schedule had been changed.

About the Author
PATSEY GRAY’S business, family life and hobbies are all concerned with horses. She has ridden since she was quite small, and during the course of her riding career she has won more than five hundred events. As a girl she showed hunters and jumpers and rode races in the fairs and rodeos of California, just like the heroines of her books.
Mrs. Gray is the wife of Dr. Gerald Gray, a plastic surgeon. They live on a thirty acre ranch in Walnut Creek, California, on which they breed, raise, train, and show Appaloosas. The Grays have two sons and two daughters. Both daughters have followed in their mother’s footsteps, and each has won the American Horse Show Association’s highest award for stock saddle seat. They are the only two sisters with their names on the trophy cup for this event.
Mrs. Gray began writing several years ago when she was kept in bed for two months after a series of horseback accidents. She says of her writing: “Naturally I write about children and horses, since they are all I know anything about. My characters and scenes are always available. When I found I could sell my stories I took some night courses at the University of California. My writing habits consist of scribbling away longhand, whenever and wherever I find time, usually for a couple of hours after I’m through riding in the morning.”

But the Tanbark Ranch wasn’t a haven of tranquility. One of the ranch hands was involved in a treacherous scheme that could destroy the ranch and the horse Sis had come to love.
