Writing can be a very solitary act and I am not a very solitary person, so I feel lucky to be part of several writing communities. Thank you to the Vermont College of Fine Arts network, the Secret Gardeners (and especially our Philly contingent!), the Middle Grade at Heart crew, and the Electric Eighteens. The connections I have made with all of you have nourished my writing and brought me so much joy. Special shout-outs to my debut-year buddies Mary Winn Heider and Melissa Sarno and my publishing-expert buddies Lisa Leicht and Val Howlett; I’m so glad to have you as my friends and colleagues.
One of the best parts of becoming a published author has been the chance to engage with teachers and librarians who are passionate about connecting kids with books. I am so grateful to all the educators who have hosted me for school visits—especially my incredible former colleagues at Friends Select—and so inspired by all the educators I’ve met online and through nErDcamp events. I appreciate all that you do for your students and for authors!
Thank you, thank you, thank you to my friends, family members, and in-laws. You have been amazing about showing up to support my writing career—sometimes after flying long distances, sometimes with babies strapped to you, sometimes bearing shiny visors, and often buying multiple books to distribute—and I am endlessly grateful.
Thank you to my most generous supporter, my mom, Elizabeth Morrison. Annabelle learns that she is smart, strong, and brave, and you have always made me feel that I am those things. You are the most loving mom, Grammy, and friend I can imagine.
Mike, thank you for being such a kind, patient, and fun partner and dad and for all the ways you show me how much you value my writing. Like Annabelle, I’ve had to learn to be careful not to talk myself into believing that other people are who I want them to be . . . but you are exactly who I hoped you would be and then some. And Cora and Sam, you amaze and delight me every day, and nothing brings me more joy than reading books with you. Thank you for being you.
