I know the scope of this struggle is dramatic and overwhelming, but I want you to have an idea of what lurks beneath the surface of everyday life. You should understand the complex causes of what happened to you. You should have an idea of what is at stake. I hope you will soon join us here in London.

  With love,

  Your Aunt Sophie

If last evening hadn’t happened, it would almost seem like a joke. But from the few times I met Aunt Sophie, I knew she wasn’t one for antics (or “larking about” as she called it). Even with all the crazy and ancient and broadly sweeping through the history of civilization stuff, this was real. No going back to my old life—

The doorbell rang. Well, if the Society was at the door, not much I could do to stop them. Anyway, hadn’t Aunt Sophie written that she was watching over me? So, I walked over to answer the door.

Standing at the entrance to my house was James Donovan, back to the usual in a navy suit and crisp white shirt. Except his head was tilted slightly downwards, the sweep of his hair slightly out of place, and his expression mixed consternation with regret.

“Jane. Your father is dead. We have to go.”
