Niall, white-faced, released Meg. He looked to the herald, who gave a brisk nod. Fraser took Niall’s. MacKenzie pressed down, growling until Somerled knelt, his twin at his side.
“Is Ewan here? I willna have him miss this.”
“Aye, laird. I have wee Morag, and she’s watching ye, too.”
“Are you done with all yer demands, Laird MacDougal?” asked MacKenzie sarcastically. “Do ye need a wee cushion under yer knobby knees? Mayhaps that wild kitten as a witness?”
“Nay, I have all my kin and clan around me now.”
Herald Cam stood before them. He slowly lifted his claymore high. He touched the flat of the blade to Niall’s shoulder. He then brought it down hard on Somerled’s shoulder. He narrowed his eyes at the gleam in Cam’s. Meg would help him find a way to get back at the herald for that.
“In the name of King James of Scotland, arise Sir Niall and Sir Somerled MacDougal!”
He and Niall reached for each other when they stood. They hugged, hard, pounding each other’s back.
“Thank ye, brother,” said Niall, choking up.
“’Tis all true,” replied Somerled. They were pulled apart by others rushing forward to pound them gleefully. He saw a flash of golden hair at chest height. He caught Niall’s eye. They waded through the crowd. He caught Meg and swung her into his arms. She struggled to get down.
“My lady wife, there’s a pair of swords needing a scabbard to slide into,” he murmured into her ear. She caught his meaning and blushed.
“And now that we’re knights ye’ll have to kneel to both of us,” added Niall. “Mouth open.”
“But, we have guests,” she replied, waving her hand at them.
“They can amuse themselves for a wee bit,” replied Somerled. “I said to all that I loved ye, and I mean to prove it.”
“As do I,” said Niall.
She looked from one to the other, eyes bright with mischief. “Twice each?”
