Sold to a Laird Page 31

by Karen Ranney

The Matrimonial Causes Act of 1857 provided the first secular divorce. A man could divorce his wife for adultery. A woman could divorce her husband as well, but in addition to adultery, she also had to prove either incest, bigamy, cruelty, or desertion.

Kilmarin is based on a variety of castles, one located at the mouth of the River Tay.

The legend of the White Lady is taken from a castle near Perth.

Tulloch’s Folly is based on a tower on Kinnoull Hill outside of Perth, built by Lord Gray in 1829 in imitation of the castles on the Rhine. It still stands.

Architect David Smart began to renovate Balhousie Castle in 1862. The castle was, essentially, rebuilt in the baronial style, since the only original feature to survive is a rubble wall on the east side.

  About the Author

KAREN RANNEY wanted to be a writer from the time she was five years old and filled her Big Chief tablet with stories. People in stories did amazing things and she was too shy to do anything amazing. Years spent in Japan, Paris, and Italy, however, not only fueled her imagination, but proved that she wasn’t that shy after all. Yet she prefers to keep her current adventures between the covers of her books. Karen lives in San Antonio, Texas, and loves to hear from her readers at www.karenranney.com.
