“Did you make any more changes to the plans?”
He nodded and pulled away. “A few. I’ll show you.” He took my hand and led me toward the bedroom.
At his red cherry desk, my eyes went to the plans laid out before me. The design for the contemporary home I had first seen as a simple drawing on his desk many months ago, with its three interlocking squares on the façade, was now a livable house complete with a den, four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a gourmet kitchen, and even a fish pond in the back garden.
Inspecting the plans, I was amazed at how a simple drawing of his dream home had turned into such a complicated project.
“I added another closet downstairs, like you wanted, and made your office a little bigger.” He pointed to the first floor of the plans, and I followed his finger to the office he had put in for me, against the rear of the home, that was meant to overlook the fish pond.
“How long do you think it will take to build?”
“Nine months, give or take,” he answered, studying the plans. “Any idea how Lily will feel having us right down the street from her?”
“Oh, she’ll love having you close by to fix everything.” I motioned to the plans. “You really think it will take that long to finish?”
“Who knows? Contractors have their own schedules and can’t be rushed.”
“Why don’t you bark orders at them like you used to do with me? Might get them to move faster.”
He held my face in his hands. “That was who I used to be. I’m not that way anymore, you know that.”
“Maybe you should make an exception for our contractor,” I offered. “Use your Dom ways on him.”
“My former Dom ways, you mean.” He chuckled. “I doubt he’d listen to me. Ralph Lawrence only listens to Mrs. Ralph Lawrence. He’s not the easiest contractor I’ve ever worked with, but he’s the best.”
“I just hope I don’t have to juggle any book tours while moving into our new home.”
He tossed his arms around me. “You can do it. You can conquer anything you set your mind to.”
I poked his firm chest. “I haven’t conquered you.”
“Oh, yes you have. From the moment we met, I was conquered by you.”
I giggled as he nuzzled my neck. “Does that mean I get to be the master now?”
“No,” he angled his head back, “but I’m willing to negotiate.”
“Negotiate? You?” I smirked into his soulful eyes. “Oh yeah, this should be good.”
