Today's Spacemage Page 20

  "No."

  "So no problem then."

"No problem. As long as I stay hidden here, where those with ambitions can't find me."

  "Someone will eventually. Pirates did."

"Yes, but hopefully that will be a long way off. Or by then, I’ll be able to hide the planet so they look, not find, and go away thinking there is nothing here worth coming back for."

  "Hide two planets you mean?"

  She was grinning.

  "I guess so."

She kissed me, and for a while we were too busy with each other to say anything. Eventually, we rolled over, and I tried to sleep.

  "Goodnight my super hero!"

  Sixty Two

  I didn’t sleep well.

The whole super hero thing upset me at a core level. I was no hero, by any definition. And while powerful, I wasn’t super in any sense of the word. A god? Please. It was all just a bad nightmare.

The morning brought sadness. I took everyone to the bridge of Jen's ship, we moved everything from Thorn's Chariot, and said our goodbyes.

They knew we weren't coming with them, without needing to ask. Jess gave me a bear hug, and Lea a lot gentler one.

Jen surprised me by hugging me for a long time.

  "Thanks Thorn, for everything."

  "You're welcome."

  "Promise to stay in touch?"

"Our pads work, so send to them."

  "We will."

Unspoken was what to do if they really needed me again. I'd placed wards on the ship, so if they did get into serious trouble, I’d know about it well before any message could arrive. I think Jen understood this. She knew I wouldn’t let them get into danger again, without being there for them.

Tasha had also completed her hugs now.

They took their chairs, and Jen nodded to me. I moved the ship into a very high orbit, Jen fired up the engines, and tested all the systems. When she was satisfied, she nodded to me.

"Seeya," I said, and moved us back to my beach.

High up in the sky was a small dot, which moved away swiftly. We stood there watching until it was gone.

"Exactly how do our pads work, so far away from the com systems?"

  "Our pads work everywhere."

  "Yes, but how?"

"Didn’t I tell you I did magic, my love?"

She mock hit me on the arm, and laughed.

It was still early for lunch, so we left our clothes at the top of the beach.

We ran hand in hand down into the water.

  Sixty Three

Over the next few weeks, I finished the work I’d set in motion, and updated this pad in the monument, with my second journey out into space.

Once again, I'm leaving this record here, to be found if anyone ever comes here again.

I still don’t know why cousins should have always been at war with each other, and what started it.

I still have no idea what happened to the advanced civilization I lived amongst for two years, or even why it vanished. But I can't help thinking it must have been something I did. Or didn’t do.

Somehow, being Today's Spacemage, has changed the past. I can't not do something, but the risk of trying is huge.

In all likelihood as you read this, I'm long dead now. I may or may not update this record. Perhaps not. What happens to me now, isn’t really relevant. I ended a pointless war, set two civilizations on a better path, and that’s all that matters in the long run.

I'll leave it to you, to be the judge of if what I did, was good or bad, right or wrong.

Things were, things are, and things happen.

We make choices, and we live with them.

  I lived with mine.

But this time, I wasn't alone.

  Thorn.

Last survivor of a planet which was never named.

  Thorn will return,

  in

  Tomorrow's Spacemage.

  A Message to my Readers

I’ve had a lot of fun writing this book, although it wasn’t planned when I wrote Yesterday's Spacemage. This is now book 2 of a trilogy, and I must admit, I'm enjoying writing more of Thorn, and being in the head of a character who cares nothing for technology, and how things work in space. Book 3 is coming, so there is more story to tell.

If you have enjoyed this book, I hope you will take the time to leave a review. All reviews are greatly appreciated, as they help assist purchasing decisions by other readers.

Sales and reviews help me to focus on my next project. Sales pay my bills, and my ability to continue writing is dependent on the sales of this book, my previous series, and what comes after.

I thank you for your support, and hope you'll continue to read my next book.
