Laura turned her head to look at him. He looked back at her. “You’ve heard that, have you?”
“I sure have.”
“And where did you hear that?”
Daryl shrugged. “About ten seconds ago when I said it.”
Laura licked her lips. “Well, I think whoever originally said it was probably a very smart person.”
“Probably is not the word for it, my dear.”
Both laughed.
“Well, I think we should see how many things in the clouds we can see together. It will be fun. But we can’t do it for too long.”
“Why not? Will you fall asleep?”
Laura laughed. “No, I am already hungry. I will be starving if I wait too long to eat.”
Daryl sat up abruptly and reached into the basket they had brought along. “You don’t need to wait. Here, have an apple.”
“Ohh, an apple, how delightful.” She took the fruit with an appreciative look. “I do so love apples. Thank you, Daryl.”
“As long as you are happy, my dear.”
She sat up and smiled at him, biting the apple. “I am happy when I’m with you, Daryl. I’m so glad we met. I’m so glad Lily and Heath met.”
“Me, too,” Daryl nodded. He decided the fruit looked good and got one for himself. He sat with her, cross-legged on the blanket, taking a large bite.
“If it wasn’t for them, we might not have met.”
Daryl shook his head. “I think we would have met eventually.”
“By that time, you might have been married to Esther.”
Daryl shot her a snide look. “You bring that up at a time like this?”
Laura giggled. “I’m joshing you, Daryl. Don’t be mad at me. Please.”
He shook his head, reaching out to touch her cheek and push back a strand of loose hair that had fallen around her ear. “I’m not mad. I couldn’t be mad at you, Laura. I… I do believe I love you.”
“Do you?” Laura’s heart was thumping a mile a minute. She’d longed to hear those words and now that she’d heard them from him, she felt faint. “I… I love you, too.”
“We haven’t had long to get to know each other, have we? You don’t suppose you will find out I am a slob or a bad cook and you won’t love me anymore, will you?”
Laura laughed. “I’ve been to your home and you are anything but a slob. I’ve eaten your dinners and I know you are a good cook. I also know you are a hard worker and you care about people who aren’t even your responsibility. That’s wonderful to me, Daryl. I’m proud to be with you.”
Daryl had never heard a woman say she was proud to be with him. He sighed and scooted closer to her. “You are a beautiful woman, Laura. Do you know that I think we would have some beautiful babies?”
Laura blushed a deep pink. “Oh, Daryl! You have been thinking about a future with me?”
“Of course,” Daryl kept his voice low so as not to embarrass her in front of her sister. “I told you, I am in love with you. I can’t help thinking about a future with the woman I love. Have you not thought about a future with me? Not at all?”
Laura’s blush deepened. She had been thinking about a future with him, but now that it was out in the open, she was afraid to say it. Finally, her head down, she nodded. She moved just her eyes up to look at him through her eyelashes. The look on his face told her all she needed to know.
She would someday be his wife.
