He took my hands, squeezing them. “Lexi, I love you.”
“I love you too.” I leaned in and pressed my mouth to his, ready to forget the lipstick – and the reception. I wanted to feel his mouth on mine.
He broke away before I could deepen the kiss. “I was…well…”
The nerves in his voice penetrated the sweet, warm haze of arousal, and I settled back on my feet in front of him. “What is it, Roman? Is everything okay?”
“Everything’s fine. Pretty damn good, really.” He crooked a grin at me, one that almost hid the nerves. “I was just…well, I think things could get better.”
I laughed. “I’m with the guy I love at the wedding of my best friend. This is pretty spectacular.”
“I know. But…”
He reached down.
My eyes widened at the sight of the little black box in his hand.
He flipped it open, and I thought my heart would just stop beating.
A diamond, set in a simple but elegant setting, sparkled up at me.
I jerked my eyes to his, and even though I knew exactly what it was, I sputtered, “W-w-what’s this?”
“An engagement ring.” He took my hand, gently lifting it.
My breathing hitched as he put the ring on my third finger. It fit perfectly. As perfectly as we had fit into each other’s lives.
“Lexi…will you marry me?
I threw my arms around his neck, and my lipstick didn’t stand a chance as I pressed my mouth to his. I was laughing and crying as I answered him.
As soon as I said, “Yes,” Roman swept me up into his arms, swinging me around.
I was breathless by the time he put me back on my feet.
Breathless, and happier than I’d ever been.
“Yes,” I said again. “You bet your ass I’ll marry you.”
