“I want my ten pounds,” Dansby said.
“I want my bloody ship,” Rabbit countered.
“Fortunes of the trade for the one, but bloody principle for the other.”
She met his eyes for a time, then sighed and picked up the fresh bottle set between her and Kaycie. She leaned forward and poured a glass, sliding it in front of Dansby. “Square?”
Dansby lifted his fingers from her envelope. “Fair enough.”

Avrel Dansby is a fun character to write, and more so to explore his earlier adventures and how he became the charming rogue we meet in the Alexis Carew series.
These books, some readers have noted, are considerably shorter than the Carew stories, by as much as a half or two-thirds in some cases, being around fifty or sixty thousand words to Carew’s, now, hundred twenty thousand per book.
A Dansby story just seems to lend itself more to the shorter, episodic feel, as I picture the young Dansby rushing from adventure to adventure, getting into and out of trouble, in much shorter time frames than Alexis’ full-on Naval career.

Acknowledgments
I’d like to acknowledge a couple great readers.
First, Mark Gutis, who’s been taking each new book in the Alexis Carew series and updating a sort of character bible with details on each character, origin, and interactions. I’ve used it frequently to refresh my memory as I write later books.
There’s also an anonymous reader, or readers, who made a comprehensive TV Tropes page for the Carew series. I had no idea …

About the Author
J.A. Sutherland wrote his first novel in 1983 when he was sixteen. It was appropriately bad. A few short stories, and a few rejection slips, later, he gave up on writing - except the voices in his head refused to stop and he lived with them for thirty years.
In 2013, he came across a "You won't believe this is a thing! " tweet and clicked on it, because he very much likes to know what he won't believe is a thing.
It was dinosaur-porn.
His first reaction was not, "I don't believe this is a thing!" it was "If there's a market for this ..."
Figuring if there were people who wanted to be ravished by the raptor, then there must be those who'd read his stories, so he started taking dictation from the voices again, and published Into the Dark (Alexis Carew Book 1) in November 2014.
The response has been overwhelming, and he can't believe this is a thing.
