She strode into the kitchen. Alexis’s parents were sitting at the table with half-eaten dinners in front of them. Their expressions shifted simultaneously from startled and disbelieving to overjoyed.
“Alexis!” Mrs. Bixby cried, rising from her chair. Tears ran unabated down her cheeks. She held out her arms.
“Hi, Mom, Dad,” Ellie said. “I’m home.” She rushed into her mother’s arms.
