by Jodi Thomas
Is there any part of the story—characters, town, buildings—that are inspired by people or places you’ve encountered in your life?
When you grow up in a small town you’re very aware of how much the people around you shape your life. No matter how old I get, I’ll still be Cliff and Sally’s daughter.
I’ve always loved wandering the main streets in small towns. Stepping into the shops. Talking to the people. Sometimes all you have to say is “How are things going?” and an hour later you’re still listening.
What do you most want readers to take away from reading this story?
I hope they’ll think about how they store their memories. Whether in quilts or scrapbooking, a diary or pictures. Our lives are stored in pieces, in memories that shape our beliefs and actions.
I hope that readers will smile when they finish my story and maybe pull out a few of their favorite memories to enjoy.
You’re best known for your Ransom Canyon series. How did you change your approach to write Mornings on Main? What was the most challenging thing about writing this novel?
I wanted to write a story that didn’t just entertain but that encouraged the reader to think about her life, as well. I wanted to go deeper into the core of who my characters were and how it affected how they lived.
I asked a friend of mine, Robyn Carr, for advice. She answered, “Your stories always turn out, Jodi, rich in action and sense of place. This time, for Mornings on Main, turn in.”
What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
Of course, write from your heart and write the story you would love to read. I’ve never followed a formula or tried to make a book fit into a line. The story has to fit the people in it.
For me every story begins with a walk. Watch “Walking the Land” at www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG4IeXueJDA.
I create the place and meet the characters, then the story takes off. Some nights I write later just to see what is going to happen next.
