He smiled at her, then turned to continue walking. “You know, perhaps instead of becoming a thief, you should ask Ephraim to train you as a detective.”
“No, thank you,” she answered softly. “I don’t care for the uniforms.”
He bit his lip to hold in an abrupt laugh. Two jokes in one night. “I suppose I’ll have to keep you with me then,” he joked back.
He smiled at her soft chuckle, then they reached the ladder leading up to the grate. Handing Liliana the lantern, he ascended first. The grate was in the middle of a street, but it was a sparsely traveled one. There was little likelihood of a carriage, or anything else, passing overhead, but he still felt compelled to make sure it was safe before inviting Liliana up.
Reaching the top of the ladder, he moved the heavy grate aside, sliding it across the cobblestones of the street. He peeked his head up to find nothing but waste bins and empty boxes lining the sides of the surrounding buildings.
“It’s safe,” he whispered down to her. “Blow out the lantern before you come up.”
He hoisted himself out onto the street, then waited to retrieve the lantern from Liliana as she appeared. Soon the grate had been replaced, and the pair darted together through the shadows, toward the first meeting that would lead to the end of the LN, or so Arhyen hoped.
