Saving Grace Page 19

by Patricia Rosemoor

Steeling himself against seduction, Declan shook his head. “I have to leave. I have to do what’s best for you.”

“You’re what’s best for me. I believe that with all my heart. And if you leave, I’ll follow you. You were right—I’m not like Lila. I love you, and there’s nowhere you can hide from me.”

  “You love me?”

She nodded and ran her hand down his chest. “So you see, it’s too late to be noble, because wherever you go, I’ll find you. I’ve learned a few things about investigative techniques in the past several days.”

Wanting to be swayed, he couldn’t help one last protest. “Grace—”

“Declan! It’s time you learned to trust yourself. Trust us. Together, we can make it. Bad things happen to everyone. Maybe not this bad. Or maybe terrible in other ways. Injuries and illnesses that have nothing to do with prophecies or curses. Whatever is out there for us, we’ll survive. Tell me you want that for us.”

“I want to believe it with every fiber of my being.”

  “Then kiss me,” she murmured.

He took her mouth in a sweet, drawn-out kiss, and the New Orleans night suddenly came alive.

The Mississippi River crashing into the shore and the tortured melody of a saxophone filling the air along with the smell of fried oysters and beignets and chicory coffee. The hot, humid air clung to his skin…the woman who heated him to his very core, who was everything to him and had cast a spell over him just like a real Voodoo Woman.

  “I love you, Grace Broussard.”

“Then take me home and prove it.”
