Michael saw the tear as it spilled over and ran down her cheek, his gut wrenching at her sadness. Holding her digits firmly, he tried to comfort her, letting her know he was still there for her.
She allowed her thumb to rub lightly across the back of his hand, taking solace in the support he gave her. He knew this had been painful for her, and she felt grateful for him and his understanding.
“I never said I loved you,” Eli tried to justify his actions. “I played the role I was given. I was to get close to you, and I did that. I was to get information from you, and I did that. That night cost me my position. When the agency found out you spent the night at my place and not the hospital, I got reassigned. Debra was reprimanded as well, for helping me.”
“But you weren’t charged with anything, because I was right about my age.” She spit the words at him in disgust.
Rolling his eyes, he hem and hawed, “Technically we don’t know. I mean sure, you’re older than Dr. Bennet let on, but since your identity is still not certain, no one really knows.” Looking at his hands, he acquiesced, “I would say your guess would be pretty close; off the record of course.”
His confession did not bring her the satisfaction she had hoped for. “So why the lie? Why the deception?” She wrinkled her face as she spoke, “I don’t get it Eli, why would you do all of this to me while pretending you were helping me?” She held her rage in check, but angry tears were still forming in her tender blue eyes.
“It did help you. Being younger helped get the deal we cut you. It made you appear less involved and more of a victim in the crimes of the Dragons –”
Tori cut him off, “And it meant you could watch me closer and send me to the halfway house and all of that other shit, too. It still gave you control over me you shouldn’t or wouldn’t have had.”
Looking at her again, he agreed offhandedly, with a silent waft of his hand.
Tori’s expression changed, another darker purpose occurring to her, “And it means you didn’t find out who I am… because you didn’t go far enough back.” Eli looked at her with a stoic expression. “You didn’t find my family, because you didn’t want to.”
Michael silently agreed; they had never intended to find her identity. She was right; changing her age helped them accomplish that goal, as well.
Eli looked even more uncomfortable, as if he knew some other dark portion of the story he wasn’t going to tell her yet, and hoped she didn’t guess. Her intuition had always been scary at times.
Staring at him, her eyes swimming with distrust, Tori hated to think what it could possibly be.

About the Author
Anyone who knows me could tell you, I am a friendly kind of person, never met a stranger and take up conversations anywhere at any time. I work hard, and my mind never seems to shut down, as I wake up often in the middle of the night with ideas pouring out and demanding to be dealt with. Of course that means much of my books were written in the middle of the night.
I grew up and still live in the great state of Texas where everything is bigger, where we have warm weather and a central location. I love my state, my town, and my family, which includes my four sons, my significant other, and many friends as well.
I have thoroughly enjoyed writing this story and hope that you will love reading it just as much. And of course, there will be many more adventures to come.
