  Blade

In this world there is nothing to fear. Death is the ultimate goal. We move through our lives searching for something more but that isn’t what we find. What we get is the harsh reality of our pasts. The inevitable pain and anguish that lingers around us. They say we are what we make this life. I suppose I made it hell then.

“Stop fuckin’ lookin’ like your favorite aunt died,” Snake snaps, passing me a beer.

  “I don’t have an aunt.”

“Well, your favorite gold fish then.”

“Motherfucker, do you have a fish?” I ask him, cocking my head to the side to glare at his dumb ass. He shakes his head and looks at me like I’m the crazy one.

  “Had a pig once.”

“A pig?” Why does that not surprise me?

“Yeah, bitch, a pig. You know, oink oink.”

God please tell me why the fuck this motherfucker was voted in? Because right now I’m not so goddamn sure!

  “Have you lost your mind?”

“No. Pigs make good house pets. You should get one, maybe your shitty ass attitude would change a little. Always sittin’ around with your dick in a bunch,” he mumbles under his breath. Sick of hearing his shit, I stand from my stool and wrap my hand around his neck, jerking him from his. His eyes widen slightly before that damn smirk crosses his ugly face.

“See what I mean?” he asks, wiggling his eyebrows.

“I’m not gonna tell you again to shut the fuck up, Snake. I don’t know how many times your momma dropped your ass when you were little but you ain’t all there fucker.” Snake just laughs as I grit my teeth in irritation.

“Hey, Prez. Why you wranglin’ that Snake?” Glancing over my shoulder at my VP, Ransom, I see him standing there with a stupid grin.

“This snake won’t shut his goddamn mouth for five minutes. Why we vote him in?” I ask, cocking my head to the side.

“Cause the motherfucker is like a snake. He can slither his little ass into places we can’t,” Ransom laughs out.

I release the grip on Snake and turn my attention to Ransom. I’m hoping he has come bearing good news today. We have a shipment of meth that we have been working to get for the last few months. Every time we thought we had it set something else happened to slow it down. Frankly, I was at the end of my rope the last time.

“Tell me good news Ransom or walk the fuck away,” I warn him before sitting back on my stool.

“Damn, you’re as cranky as a baby without a nipple to suck. What the hell is wrong with you?” Ransom asks when Snake decides to chime in again. “That’s what I told the motherfucker. He needs his cock sucked or somethin’ nice to stick it in. Maybe we should head down to Fifth Street and pick him up one of those new girls Whisper has.”

For whatever reason, they were right. My attitude has been off lately. I can’t place the reason why, and honestly, I don’t give a shit.

“You got news or not? I’ve got work to do,” I snap at Ransom.

He shakes his head, plucks his cigarette from his lips, and glares at me. “Yeah, the shipment is good to go. It’ll be in on Friday. Mighty Mac is in charge of the warehouse, and I’m sendin’ Axle that way to pick up. Shouldn’t have any problems this time.”

I blow out a breath and run my fingers through my hair, nodding my head. Thank fuck.

“Good. I’m headin’ out. I need to finish that house over on Kenner before the end of the week. Neo and Rebel are already over there rippin’ up the carpet.” Walking away from the bar, I head toward the door when Ransom jogs up next to me.

“You been off. What’s goin’ on, brother? It ain’t like you to not talk to us.”

Fuck! I know it’s not. They’re my boys and have been for years. Neo, Rebel and I started a construction business about ten years ago when I first came out of the Navy. It was a job that I needed with guys I trusted. Ransom has been my VP since the day I took over this club ten years ago. When I came back, this club was at its lowest. Nothing was going right and too many guys were ending up in jail. It was being run the wrong way. It was all about the money, guns, and drugs. Yeah, we still dabble in that shit, but we all have legit jobs too.

“I don’t know, Ransom. My head’s just off. I can feel it but can’t pinpoint it. The PTSD is fuckin’ with my sleep.” I blow out a breath and shake my head. “I’ll get my shit together.”

Ransom watches me for a long second before nodding his head. “Don’t shut us out, Blade. We’ve been there, remember? I don’t forget for a fuckin’ day what that war was like.” Slapping a hand on my shoulder he quicklyturns and walks away.

If he was anyone else, I would have told him to fuck off, but I can’t, not them. They know what it was like, they know the dreams that haunt us. That’s part of what pulls us together. I turn on my heel and step out into the warm Florida sun and take a deep breath. I just need to get this job over with and move on to the next. I head toward my bike, grab my helmet, and climb on as I see Angela walking toward me, a pissed off scowl on her face. I almost want to laugh at the look itself but I’m not that much of a bastard.

“Who pissed in your corn flakes?” I ask when she gets closer. She shoots me a look that could kill as I chuckle.

“That piece of shit here?” she asks, her hip cocked out and one hand resting on it. Angela is a sight to see. Her dyed blonde hair hangs around her shoulders, her huge fake tits popping out of the top of her shirt. She stands as tall as a man at nearly six fe
et which makes me laugh when her and Snake stand together. It isn’t much about him being shorter than her; it’s more that the fire in that girl is a stark contrast to the dumbness of Snake.

“He’s always in there. What’d he do this time?” I ask, hoping to get a laugh before I leave.

“What did he do? The idiot either, a) dumped oil while he was cooking this morning and didn’t realize it; or b) he did it on purpose thinking he was funny! Either way, it wasn’t,” she snaps, pulling the leg of her already short shorts up revealing a huge bruise. I wince a little looking at that shit.

  “Damn, babe! That’s bad!”

“It’s beyond bad! How the hell am I supposed to work with this on my leg and ass?” she snaps, pointing at the giant purple spot.

“Cover that shit with makeup. Ain’t that what you strippers do?”

  “I’m a dancer! Not a stripper, Blade!”

Sure, let’s make is sound better. A stripper is a goddamn stripper no matter how you look at it.

“Well, dance your ass on down to Walmart and cover that fucker with makeup,” I tease her. She rolls her eyes, flips me off and stomps into the clubhouse. I watch the door close to the Pit of Hell and laugh to myself. Pit of Hell. That is about right for us.

  Chapter 2

  Lola

“First of all, I’m not lying! You are a complete asshole, do you know that?” I scream louder as my asshole boyfriend fiddles with his lighter. I’d like to shove it straight up his ass.

“I know that and you’re a complete whore, Lola! Working down at that strip club and you want me to believe you haven’t fucked at least half your clients?” He glances up at me from under the bill of his Red Sox hat, those brown eyes penetrating right through me. I’d like to say that he’s ugly but that would be a straight up lie. He’s hot as fuck but his mind is something else. I guess it’s true what they sat about being ugly on the inside.

“I dance! I sure as hell don’t fuck for money, Ryan!”

“Well, I don’t want it,” he says firmly.

My heart slowly falls to the floor. I thought he’d be my happy ever after as long as we’d been together. Six years is a long time considering I’m only twenty-two.

“A little late for that!” I yell louder. His dark eyes lock with mine and that monster I know all too well rears its ugly head. My insides quiver as he stands slowly from the chair that he’d been sitting in. He stalks toward me like I’m his prey, and in a sense, I am. His eyes seem to darken the closer he gets.

“You understand what the fuck I just said?” he asks, his tone deadly.

“I heard you but I’m keepi-”

The words don’t even get out when his fist slams into my stomach. I double over, wrapping my arms around myself. I was naive. I suppose I still am. I thought that a baby would make him stop, make the violence stop. I didn’t plan on it, we used protection, but one stupid fucking night the condom broke and this is the end result.

“I warned you, Lola! I don’t want kids. Never did!” Grabbing me by the hair, he pulls me upright so that he can look in my eyes. The evil that seeps from his pores makes my whole body shudder.

“I’m sick of this, of you! You do shit behind my back, fuck other guys. Shake your ass at that club then come home and tell me you’re pregnant. What kind of fool do you think I am?”

Me being me, I can’t control my mouth. I word vomit more than I should and it always lands me in hot water. “You really want me to answer that?” I ask as tears slide down my cheeks. Another fist to my ribs knocks the air from my lungs.

“The dumbest kind of fool! You are a worthless…piece of…shit!” I pant between words trying to catch my breath. My body screams in pain but I won’t let him win this.

“I’m a piece of shit?” He jerks my hair back so he can see my face. “I’m a piece of shit?” His fist collides with my eye and the room begins to spin.

“Tell me again how I’m a piece of shit!” he roars loudly.

“Piece of shit,” I grumble as the room spins out of control. Everything after that just sort of becomes a blur. I am numb to the pain, which isn’t unusual for me. I have become an expert at locking myself away when he turns into this monster. No, this isn’t the first time he’s hit me and I’m sure it won’t be the last. I’m caught in his web. I’m caught in this shit. I’m stuck. What’s the alternative? Life on the streets again? I don’t think I can do that.

When I first met Ryan, his good looks drew me in. He was gorgeous, and when I saw him standing outside the club next to that hot ass sports car, I thought he was perfect. We hooked up after that more than once and each time just got better and better. I didn’t see just how off he was until he asked me to move in with him. Of course, I jumped at the opportunity. I’d lived on the streets since I was fourteen and started at Triple D’s, the strip club when I was sixteen. Yes, Barnie, the owner is as shady as they come.

Meeting Ryan changed me in ways that I wasn’t sure I liked. Everything was great in the beginning. He was working at his dad’s company and had his own place. I loved it here. Top notch everything. I never wanted for a thing because Ryan provided it all. That was until I stopped agreeing to his fucked-up rules. At first it was little things. No showers until he got home. That was fine by me since he usually joined me for them. Wait for him to get home to eat before I went to the club on days I worked. Okay, again I didn’t mind it. Then the weird shit started coming. He wanted to tie me up and fuck me. Kinky? Sure, I could get into that, but he wanted me afraid. He wanted me to fight him. He kept saying that it was role play but the more he did it, the more I started to think something was off. When the news flashed across the screen one night that there was a killer on the loose in Florida that was raping women and tying them to the bed, I started to wonder about him. Of course, I don’t think it was Ryan who did that, but at the end of the day, I was still a little unsure.

“Wake up!” His voice rips through my subconscious.

My eyes slowly flutter open and that’s when I realize the position I’m in. My face hurts like hell, my whole body aches. I pull at my arms only to realize that he has me tied to the bed. I jerk at the ropes trying to get them to give just a little but Ryan is a master at this. There is no give and no way to get out.

“What are you doing?” I ask as I watch him. He stands next to the bed, nearly naked with a condom in his hand.

“I’m taking what’s mine, Lola. Are you going to fight me like a good girl?” His question makes my skin crawl. I jerk at the ropes again and try to wiggle my way free but it’s no use. Tears stream down my cheeks as Ryan smirks at me.

“You never wanted to play this game, did you? Maybe now that you see how serious I am, you will play along,” he sneers. My heart beats faster as I watch him slide the condom on and climb onto the bed. I try to bring my legs together but with each ankle tied to the bedpost, it’s not happening. Ryan has done a lot of things to me but rape has never been one of them.

“I don’t want this, Ryan,” I cry, trying to reason with him. He chuckles and kneels between my spread legs, nudging his cock at my entrance. I close my eyes when his fingers dig into my skin.

“Open your fucking eyes, Lola. Watch me take what I want from you or I will fucking kill you.” The way he said it has me opening my eyes quickly. He stares down at me just as he shoves his cock in all the way. My body tries to protest, knowing this is all wrong, but Ryan doesn’t stop, nor does he care. Thrust after painful thrust, I clench my eyes closed and try to endure the pain until I feel his fist hit my mouth. With a cry, I open my eyes and look up at him. He nods his head and grins as he violates me. Slap after slap to my face makes my vision slowly blur and everything fades. Soon I’m lost in the darkness that comforts me and swaddles me in its fog.

  Chapter 3

  Blade

Sweat drips down my temples as I work on this flooring. We do all kinds of shit in our business. We pride ourselves on being able to handle most jobs that are brought our way.

“How’s it lookin’?” Neo asks leaning against the counter and nodding toward the trim he’s been working on. A beer bottle dangles from the tips of his fingers, a cigarette from his lips.

“Lookin’ good, brother. You sure as hell know what you’re doin’,” I tell him. He pulls the cigarette from his lips, nods his head and looks back at me.

“Goddamn right I do! It’s like fuckin’ a bitch. Once you get into a groove, you just let it flow,” he says. Shaking my head, I wipe the sweat from my forehead on the back of my hand and climb off the floor. Reaching for his beer, I grab it, take a long pull, and pass it back.

“Shit’s gonna look fuckin’ good when we get done with it. Rebel should have that upstairs about done,” I say when I hear boots stomping down the steps.

“Rebel already has that shit done!” he announces before we see him come around the corner. He walks over and grabs a beer off the counter, popping the top quickly.

“As soon as you get done down here, I can get the last of this shit painted. Upstairs looks sweet as fuck though. Asshole is gonna be happy with how it looks,” Rebel says, bringing the bottle to his lips. I nod my head knowing that Rebel knows what he’s doing just as much as the rest of us do. He takes great pride in his work, and I respect him for that.

“Few more days and we should have this one ready. We got that deal on the one in Coconut Grove. Big fuckin’ job over there. We should be set for at least six months on that one. The guy wants all three bathrooms redone, as well as four bedrooms and the basement finished.”

“Three bathrooms? What the fuck people need with three bathrooms?” Rebel asks, shaking his head. Neo chuckles and adds, “You know when you eat those bad tacos and it’s a literal shit race. You’re all runnin’ for the same thing and there’s only one.”

I shake my head. “You would know, wouldn’t you, half-breed?” Rebel says just to fuck with Neo. Neo is half-white, half-Mexican. Not that I give a shit about what he is, he’s a damn good person and that’s all I give a fuck about. Unfortunately, Neo’s always had a hard time fitting in though.
