The Nephilim: Book One Page 19

She pulled him toward her and embraced him, “I missed you.”

“I missed you too.” He squeezed her back, too tightly making her squeal, and then they both laughed. “It’s just like…”

  “What?”

  “Like normal.”

After she left him, Sophie found her way to the garden. She stepped out onto the soft grass and looked up to the faux sky, it’s moon shining back at her. It’s not real, she told herself, none of it is. Nothing was as pretty as she remembered it, the vivid leafy jades now a sort of dulled mossy green, the bright neon flowers clashing instead of complimenting one another.

She sighed and dropped down onto the ground. “I’ll find you, okay?” she spoke to the sky, “I promise.”

  Epilogue

He opened his eyes. There was darkness all around, oppressive and all-encompassing. He thought he should be afraid, but no fear came. In fact, he felt nothing.

“Do you know your name?” The voice boomed all around him, jerking him to his feet. His heart raced, as did his mind. It reached out for something, a fleeting memory. Someone had called his something once, but it escaped him.

He cleared his throat, dry and sore, “No.”

“Do you know what you are?” This time when the voice sounded he did not jump. He almost welcomed it filling up the abyss surrounding him.

He touched his stomach, his chest, his face. Again, there was nothing, “No.”

  “Do you know your purpose?”

He stretched his arms out to either side of him. The air there was stagnant, and he could not tell what lay beyond, if anything. He prepared to answer in the negative, opening his mouth, then stopped.

It washed over him then, like thousands of fingers pressing it into the pours of his skin, and he drank it in greedily. It filled him up and gave him light, and he could finally see the voice’s owner before him. “Yes.”

  His master smiled, “Good.”
