I squeezed his shoulders. “No, you haven’t mentioned that,” I said, mimicking him.
“Well, I do,” he said, taking my face in his hands and bringing it down to his. How could a kiss be both searing and tender at the same time? Because that’s what it was. I melted against him, and for several seconds there was nothing in the world but his lips and his warmth.
But I couldn’t wait any longer. I had to tell him. I broke off the kiss with a gasp. “I love you, too.”
He traced my lower lip with his thumb. “Oh, good. That’s convenient.”
I chuckled, then wriggled against him.
He made a deep noise in his throat. “As much as I’m enjoying this, you need to get off me so I can read this poem to you.”
“I don’t need the poem. I have you.”
He smiled. “Trust me. You want to hear this.”
Oh, well. This probably wasn’t the best position to be caught in anyway. I rolled off. “All right.”
We crawled back toward the lamp and sat cross-legged in the grass, facing each other. He flipped through the pages of the book until he found what he was looking for. “Okay, you ready?”
“Yeah,” I whispered.
“‘Love’s Philosophy’ by Percy Bysshe Shelley,” he said, reading slowly, as though he wanted me to take in every single word.
“‘The fountains mingle with the river
And the rivers with the Ocean,
The winds of Heaven mix for ever
With a sweet emotion;
Nothing in the world is single;
All things by a law divine
in one spirit meet and mingle.
Why not I with thine?’”
He twined the fingers of one hand with mine.
“‘See the mountains kiss high Heaven
And the waves clasp one another;
No sister-flower would be forgiven
If it disdained its brother;
And the sunlight clasps the earth
And the moonbeams kiss the sea:
What are all these kissings worth
If thou kiss not me?’”
He looked up from the book, his face a mixture of expectation and uncertainty. Warmth flooded my chest. I slid my fingertips across his cheek. “I think,” I whispered, “I want you to read that to me every day.”
He smiled. “Be happy to, Drama Queen.”
I kissed him. “Thank you, Dragon Boy.”
