I’d told him about Gavin and his stupid prank and asked, “Can’t you arrest him for something? Harassment, or general stupidity?”

Ryan had laughed, a deep belly laugh that made his gray eyes crinkle up, and made me smile.

“I’m afraid not,” he’d said. “The man admitted to what he’d done, and though it wasn’t funny at all, there’s nothing we can do about it.”

I’d changed the topic and tried to forget about Gavin, chatting instead about how crazy Claudia had turned out to be. Ryan told me that Claudia had lawyered up, but given her confession and attempt on our lives, it was unlikely she’d be able to avoid justice.

The next morning, there was a loud knock on my door just after noon.

I opened it to find Ian standing in the hallway with Snowflake under his arm, his face positively radiating with excitement.

“I have excellent news,” he said, rushing into my apartment and setting Snowflake down on the floor. Snowflake immediately raced to the top of the fridge, where she sat down, licked her paws, and stared down at the two of us superciliously.

“What is it?” I said warily. All too often, Ian’s excellent news doesn’t sound particularly excellent to me.

“The producers of Dance Party USA contacted me and Nanna,” he said, his voice brimming with enthusiasm. “We didn’t get through to the next round!”

I frowned. “I thought you wanted to get through. You’re excited about this?”

Ian shook his head. “No, no, it’s tragic we didn’t get in and all that. But the good news is, they were so impressed by my performance, they want me to appear on another reality TV show! It’s some kind of survival show. They looked me up in that audition we did for that singing show, and they said that I’ve got talent. They want me to appear on TV! Isn’t that wonderful? I’m going to audition for the show next week, and then I can be one of the contestants!”

I looked at Ian hesitantly. I wasn’t convinced that his appearing on another reality TV show was a good idea. I didn’t want to dampen his enthusiasm either, so I said, “That might be fun for you. I hope I don’t need to get involved with the show or anything.”

“No, you don’t. I just have to spend a few hours taping the show, and that’s it! It’s going to be so much fun!”

I nodded, not entirely convinced. I wanted Ian to have fun, but my experience of his adventures has been that he often gets into trouble, and I’m forced to bail him out.

I had a bad feeling about Ian’s plans for the reality TV show, but I smiled and tried to look supportive.

“I’ll be along for the ride,” I said, with forced cheerfulness.

Of course, I didn’t know just what that ride would entail.
