"Earth," he motioned toward the conjured home planet, "on the one hand, represents a future with a dead end." Earth faded into blackness. "On the other hand," gesturing towards Searth, "represents a potential future for the human species. By choosing a future as the first E-human and Captain of this vessel, you have ensured that humanity will get the chance to live somewhere else and thrive. I will let you in on a little secret. I had foreseen the many possibilities of the many twists and turns of the Project. You were almost right in your speech about the things that was instrumental in the survival of the species. Indeed, the three things that you mentioned were quite right. However, there is a fourth reason that the species will survive."

  "And that is?" Levi wondered.

  "You."

  "Why me?"

"Remember, I told you when you balked about taking this position, that you would be dooming the project if you did not accept."

  "I remember something about that."

"I ran all the possible outcomes for each individual on the short list. You were the only one with the highest positive outcomes. The rest of the candidates paled compared to your score." Sonny flashed the data past Levi, and he understood.

  "I didn't understand," Levi's emotions were subdued.

"You see at that time, it was you that was at the critical moment of human evolution."

"Usually those events are only realized centuries after they happen. But you do what you do best, and that’s prediction. So, what do you predict in our future now?"

"I have my bets. But as you say, it is hard to figure in just what human perseverance can do to an equation."

  "Damn right, Sonny! Damn right.”
