Chapter One
“Tara Marie Snyder, knock it off! Jeez! So what if I peek? They’re hot, and it’s not like that young thing is going make a move on me.” Maria tried to do the eyebrow thing at her youngest child who occasionally reminded her of her ex-husband, the old prude. “Plus, I’m only fifty, and I’m sure not dead, like your father wishes sometimes.” Maria relaxed and took a sip of coffee, grinning thinking of the nice package she had gotten in the mail from the erotic store the day before. Yep, she was going to have fun tonight.
She crossed her legs and took a deep breath. Every Sunday morning, Maria came downtown to the local coffee shop just to watch the people roll in. She loved Detroit, but so many were afraid to come here with the loss of jobs, home foreclosures, and such. Sure, there were the thugs, but the sidearm she had a permit to carry kept her protected, plus the self-defense class she took every year helped a lot, too.
Maria patted Lady Smith, the gun she’d named after her great-grandmother Ella, who was a hoot, frowned upon by everyone when she was alive. “Tara, why are you here?” Maria focused on her daughter. “Don’t get me wrong. I love seeing my baby.” Tears threatened, and she tried to swallow the knot forming in her throat. “I know you would rather be with your hunk husband.”
Her daughter grinned and reached over, squeezing her arm. “I wouldn’t miss our Sunday morning bitch fest for the world. I’m afraid I have more of you in me than you thought. Do you know that hunk husband once more tried to stop me from coming?” Tara rolled her eyes. “I swear you’d think we didn’t know what is going on.” Her daughter sipped her drink but wouldn’t meet her eyes.
“I know that expression, and you are up to something,” Maria said.
“Well, it seems you have caught the attention of a certain biker. He’s been sitting on his hog staring at you. He is hot in a bad way. So not like Dad.”
Maria laughed. “I swear, baby, you confuse me. One minute you are yelling I’m too old to be out here searching for men, the next you are encouraging me.” She casually shifted in her seat to take a quick peek at the biker. His gaze caught and held hers. It wasn’t a cold chill that raised the hair on her arms, but a hot one. The man had Maria squirming in her seat, as everything south of her belly button seemed to be burning. Even her nipples had hardened under his watchful scan. The man had the deepest dark-blue eyes she’d ever seen. The fact she could see them from across the street was amazing. She wanted to crawl up his long legs and wrap her limbs around his body. She jumped as her daughter pinched her arm.
“Jeez, Mom, stop staring at him,” she teased.
“Damn it, Tara, don’t do that. You know I bruise easy.” Maria rubbed her arm. “But I think the temperature has gone up ten degrees.” Maria took a gulp of her coffee, which did not help with the heating problem in her body. “Plus, I wasn’t staring, but he is handsome. Hell, the whole package is nice, but so screams bad boy.”
Once more, her daughter busted out laughing. “Which romance story were you reading this time?”
Not holding back, Maria pulled Ann Mayburn’s story, Ivan’s Captive Submissive out of her purse. Loving the cover of the book, Maria ran her finger over it. “I swear, I should have started reading her before. She is good. So how is my grandson doing?” Maria asked, trying to cool her libido down. But she couldn’t help but peek at the man across the street at the local diner. He leaned against his bike, now, his dark-jeaned legs stretched out in front of him and his arms crossed over his chest, but he turned his head toward the loud sound of more bikes. She didn’t have to wait long to see them pull into the diner’s parking lot, raising the total to about sixty bikes at the restaurant.
“Brian was asking for his nana last night. Seems someone promised him a trip to Cedar Point. Even Doug’s kids were yelling about it. Are you really thinking about taking the kids to this amusement park by yourself?”
She frowned at her daughter. “Do you really think I’d be that stupid? Please. I’ve bribed a few friends to help out. You know Faith. She’s coming, along with Lori. We’re taking two vans up there next weekend, staying at Great Wolf Lodge. Did you know they have a spa? Anyway, we’ll spend the days at Cedar Point. At night, we’ll take turns watching the kids at the pool and having spa treatments. It will give you and your brother, Doug, time alone with your mates, so enjoy it while you can.”
Tara grinned from ear to ear. “Oh, I plan to take your suggestion to heart and make a reservation at that cute bread and breakfast in the next town over. I want a brother or sister for Brian before the age difference gets too big.” She’d always resented the fact that she and her brother weren’t closer in age.
“Tara, for a long time, I didn’t think I could have children, so when Doug came along, well, I thought that was it then I got pregnant with you. You were, my miracle baby. One baby was enough for your father, he didn’t want any other children, but he had too much to drink one night, and you were conceived.”
Her daughter laughed. “You know Dad still says you got him drunk.”
“From the minute you were born, you were your father’s little girl. He would grumble about not having wanted more children, but he loved you. Your father might be a total ass, but he gave his all to you kids. That, I’m very grateful for.” A dark shadow fell upon their tiny table and Maria turned to see the hot biker standing behind her.
She grabbed the table in front of her and sucked in her breath, in some kind of trance. Maria couldn’t move her head. She trembled as a small orgasm raced through her. Never in her life had a man affected her so strongly. “What the…?” Maria whimpered, but finally lowered her head, trying to catch her breath as her body tingled from head to toe.
“Excuse me for interrupting, but I was wondering if I could buy you ladies another coffee or a donut?” Another tremor raced through her at his deep voice. Damn, his voice had her blood heating and her pussy needing.
Over by his bike, several rid
ers glowered, and she wondered what their issue was.
“You sure you want to join us? It doesn’t seem your friends are too happy with you being here,” Maria stated, but pushed out the third chair at their table. Hell, any man who could give her an orgasm by being next to her was a god in her book.
Her daughter kept her mouth shut as Maria slowly brought her body under control. Labor breathing sure did come in handy sometimes. Maria blew out and released her grip on the table.
But as soon as she relaxed, her son-in-law, Cain, and two of his buddies moved in. “He will not be sitting down with you. This is supposed to be a women’s breakfast!” A low growl rumbled from him, and Tara cringed. “Crap,” she muttered knowing his doggy nose would be able to scent her excitement. Her face heated.
Tara reached out to him, but her husband shrugged her aside. “Cain, please.” Tara’s pleading ruined the afterglow of whatever had happened with the stud standing next to her. This made her furious since it was the first time in years someone or something other than her hand had given her an orgasm. “Listen here, Wolf Boy.” She leaned forward, giving her son-in-law the evil eye. “I gave you permission to marry my baby, even change her to what you are, but you ever interfere in my business or growl at my daughter like that again, I’ll cut off that thing you think is big and shove it where the sun does not shine. Do I make myself clear? And, Tara, stop begging; it does no good and makes you look like a fool. “She didn’t mean it, baby.” Tara jumped up and placed herself between her husband and Maria. “Mom, apologize right this minute.”
Maria shrugged, annoyed at the distraction from the stud next to her. “You know, maybe it’s best you stay home, Tara. It’s obvious your husband does not like us meeting, and I’d hate to show him up in front of his friends, again.” Maria swallowed the last of her coffee and stood, stretching. She winked at the hot biker, who was shaking with silent laughter. “Sorry for all this mess. I don’t know what happened earlier”—Her cheeks warmed and her body lower body came alive again at the memory—“but, thank you. Maybe we can have coffee another time if you’re ever around.” As she grabbed her purse to leave, some of the crowd lingering near where he’d left his bike headed toward them, a few angry-looking females in the lead.
At once, Cain threw Tara behind him and snarled.
Maria stopped. “Okay, I don’t know what’s going on, but enough. It’s like you guys are on steroids or something. Cain, take Tara home. I’ll call later in the week about our trip to Cedar Point. I’m going home. I don’t need this crap. I divorced her father because I couldn’t handle the stress from a macho male. I sure don’t need it from you.” She pushed in her chair to leave, but Cain’s words stopped her.
“You are not taking my son anywhere. It’s obvious you don’t know what you are dealing with. Mike, follow my mother-in-law home, and then take Tara to the house. I need a word with Alexander.” Cain kept his narrowed gaze on the man she’d been about to have coffee with. When she didn’t move, Cain reached out for her arm.
“Touch me, and I’ll put a bullet in your knee cap. You might give my daughters orders, but not me.” She grabbed her keys. “I need to swing by the hospital and see Sandra. Tara, since it’s obvious your husband has lost his marbles, I’ll speak with you later.” The thought of Cain refusing to allow her to take her grandchild for the weekend had her wanting to put a foot up his alpha ass.
So what if he was the alpha of the local wolf pack. Such rudeness was uncalled for. She threw down five bucks for the tip and spun to face her daughter. “I know he’ll never hit you, or I wouldn’t leave you with him. Love you, Tara, but you really need to stop being a wimp. Learn from my mistakes.” She pushed past them all, with a longing glance at the mystery man. Cain’s glare burned into the back of her head.
Maria brushed past the trio of bitchy-looking women on the way to her car. What was their problem?
Tara had picked the fool, but Maria did not have to deal with the ass.
For twenty-five years, Maria had put up with the stress of her ex-husband’s yelling and hurtful comments, until she’d had a mental breakdown. Her doctor told her either make a change or she would not last the year.
Chapter Two
Alexander watched his blood mate stomp away. Oh, she was a feisty one, but she would have to handle all that came with him and his kind. Her orgasm when he approached confirmed that she was indeed his woman. Alexander gave Radar the signal to follow her, knowing his best friend and beta would protect her for him while he dealt with the alpha of the local wolf pack.
But what had him pissed were the three bitches who had crowded her as she left. “Excuse me for one minute, Cain.” Alexander said.
He reached out and grasped the ringleader, Eva, by the neck, lifting and shaking her. “You have three hours to pack your shit and leave. You are not welcome in my presence or home again. If I even hear you are near it, or my woman, you’ll die without warning. All three of you have given me nothing but trouble. No more.” He released his hold on the offending woman drawing little attention since Detroit was a dead town.
Not waiting for a response, he spun to face Cain. They had met a few times at different functions, but never had reason to speak. Now, it appeared as if they would have a family connection.
“So why the hostility? Have I or one of my family members done something to offend you and yours?” He sat down across from Cain at the table the women had vacated.
“You are messing with my family. I protect what is mine. I never knew you to step over the boundaries,” the wolf challenged.
Alexander ignored the aggression and placed his breakfast order. “Coffee, Cain?”
When he shook his head, Alexander ordered it anyway. “We need to speak, and it’s going to take a few minutes. You might as well have something to drink while I eat.” He was starving; he and his entire clan had been on the road for hours. He’d arrived with fifty-six members, but he had cast out three of them. The coffee came. “I didn’t set out to intrude in your life, believe me. This is a shock to me, also, but one that can’t be ignored.” He met Cain’s gaze. “One only meets his special woman once in his lifetime, and if she passes you by, you don’t get another chance.”
“Who? If you say Tara, I’m ripping your head off.” Cain started to get up, but Alexander shook his head.
“Relax, wolf. I’m not after Tara. It’s her mother who claims this cold heart.” Alexander took a drink of his coffee while the wolf absorbed what he had just been told, but laughter was not the reaction he expected.
“Oh, this is good. Do you know what they call Tara’s mother around here?” Cain chuckled. “Loco Tsunami because, when Maria goes off, no one is safe. Hell, you saw her with me. She won’t cower to anyone, and she has reason for her attitude.” Cain got a faraway look on his face. “My wife and her brother don’t know the whole story of her divorce, but I do, and it’s not pretty.”
“Who do I kill?” Alexander asked; the thought of anyone hurting the small, fiery bundle had him aching to hunt.
“She wasn’t physically hurt, but the emotional scars are there. For years, her ex was verbally abusive. I caught him once, when I was first courting her daughter, calling her every name in the book. His nickname for her was double stomach,” Cain snapped. “I don’t know why human males behave like they do. We were always taught to protect and cherish our women.”
Alexander sat back as the waiter brought his food and left, digesting all that Cain had told him. “In other words, I’ve got my work cut out for me.”
The bastard had a smug expression as he took a drink of coffee. “If it was anyone else, there wouldn’t be a chance in hell at her, but you….” Cain set his cup down and gave him the once over. “You have the balls and the stamina to penetrate her shell. Be warned, that shell is thick—it had to be to live with the asshole she was married to. But, then again, anyone who can do what you did to her earlier….” Cain grinned, and Alexander ignored the last remark. Maria’s orgasms we
re his and his alone. He would not discuss them.
“I’m surprised you didn’t step in when you heard him degrading her?” Alexander took a bite of steak.
“Who says I didn’t step in? He limped for two weeks, but I’m afraid I pushed him to the next step.” Cain sighed. “She caught him in bed with her best friend, two weeks later.”
“You feel guilty for what happened. Don’t. From my experience, most human males don’t care anything about the females as long as they themselves are happy. Sick, really. I guess that’s why I don’t mind draining a few when I see the abuse. So, are you going to allow her to take your son to this amusement park?” He pushed his clean plate away.
“Most likely. I don’t want my balls in a cookie jar. I’ll make sure I send a few men with them. I take it you’re going?” Cain once more smirked, making him want to smack it off his face.
“You know I’ll be there. Then, we are to be family. Any problem with that?”
“Are you relocating here, or are you taking Mom back to your place, Dad?” Cain teased.
“I have no idea. If her children are around here, I have a feeling she won’t want to leave them or the grandchildren. We’ll have to see. My worry is getting her over the age thing.” He grunted and scanned the area. “But with all the foreclosures, we might be able to find a decent home we could live with around here, unless you have a problem with it?”
“No problem with it and, yeah, what are you, four hundred? She’ll most likely feel like one of those cougar women who like younger men when she’s actually going to be with a man who could be her father nine times over.” Cain stood and stretched. “You might want to warn your people we have a killer around. Two of our females have been skinned and left to die.”
“Thanks, I’ll warn them. Any clue who is doing the killing?” Alexander stood, noting some of the members of his house were coming out of the diner across the street, waiting for him.
