by Vivi Holt

Christy pressed her face close to his and nodded. “Of course,” she whispered. “Of course I want to stay. It’s all I want.” She closed her eyes as she felt his breath against her cheek. “But do you think you can ever come to love me truly, Brent?”

Brent pulled back and looked at Christy in dismay. “I already do my darling.”

Christy nodded and gazed into Brent’s blue eyes, seeing the love that lay in them. “I feel the same way.” He grinned widely, and pulled her close to him, one hand on the small of her back, the other cupping her face in his palm. He pulled Christy toward him again, and their lips pressed together, for a second kiss. This time the kiss was filled with love and tenderness and sent Christy’s head spinning. She knew now that this was her home and she never wanted to leave.

  From the editor

One Day in Ocilla is a charming, enchanting, and beautifully detailed portrait of small-town Georgia life. Written from the perspective of Sam, an almost-forty single father and the town’s postman, the author takes us through a single day in Sam’s life and we discover the town of Ocilla and the lives of its residents in the process.

We come to know Sam as an observant, kind, and regimented character. The circumstances of his past and the last sixteen years of raising his son, Tripp, on his own have led him to depend on a stable, scheduled lifestyle. Which is why it’s so vastly interesting when events begin to unfold that shake up not only Sam’s schedule – and eventually throw it right out the window – but also shake up Sam’s perspective on life altogether. Watching Sam open his heart and open his life to a little adventure is deeply relatable, rewarding, and heart-warming.

As we see Sam’s character grow and change, we also get sneak peeks into the secret lives of everyone he encounters. It turns out that postmen are a rather attentive bunch, which makes the narrative ripe for humor and even just a hint of scandal. Mirren’s descriptions are vibrant and we can feel the heat coming off the pavement of the hot, gorgeous Georgia day as strongly as if we were standing on the sidewalk ourselves. One Day in Ocilla is a delightfully satisfying read that introduces readers to the small town and its residents and provides a great escape for anyone looking for a little warm weather and an even warmer heart.
