Donovan's War Page 23

by W. J. Lundy

Tommy called the bartender over and ordered the woman another drink. She took it, smiled, and stood from her stool to make her way around the bar toward him. That was strike two. And the final confirmation that he needed to know she was on the job. If he’d made the same offer to any other woman, on any other day, she’d have waited until he came to her. She walked around the bar and sat beside him and smiled.

“Are you a local here?” she asked.

Tommy laughed. “What a silly question.”

  “Excuse me?”

“Why would you ask if I’m a local? Do you need a place to stay?” Tommy asked.

The woman turned away from him. He knew that her impulse was to walk away. If she’d been a real tourist looking for fun, that’s exactly what she would have done. But that’s not what she was. Strike three. She turned back to face him. “I’m sorry if you took that the wrong way. I was just thinking this is a beautiful spot off the regular tourist paths. I was surprised to find it.”

Tommy grinned and nodded. “Well done,” he said.

She looked at him, confused, and he laughed at her. She shook her head, knowing she’d been made. Tommy raised a hand, ordering himself another drink then looked at her. “What are you here for?”

“Fine then, let’s just get to it,” she said, frustrated that her cover had been blown. She looked across the bar to see the bartender wiping down the far side with a cloth. She reached into her bag and placed a yellow envelope on the bar in front of Tommy.

  “What’s this?”

“It’s your offer, and to be honest with you, it’s the best deal you’re going to get.”

“What do you mean ‘deal’?” Tommy said, taking the envelope. He looked inside and found a thick stack of bound cash.

“Look, I wanted to come at you slowly. I had a whole thing planned on how to break this to you, but we can do it your way. People know what you did in Syria, and you’ve made some fans at the Executive Branch. He calls you the Jackal Hunter.”

“He was a Hyena,” Tommy corrected. “Executive Branch? You mean the President?”

She shrugged, not answering the question. “Let’s just say someone appreciates your ability to make things happen while staying off the radar.”

  “Things?”

She nodded her head and sipped from her glass. “We’re tired of waiting to be attacked before we respond. We want a person like you that can go out and get things done.”

“But mostly you want a person you can deny and hang out to dry if things go sideways.”

“Take it or leave it, Mr. Donovan.”

Tommy lifted the envelope again. “And this—what’s it for? What’s the job?”

“Consider it a retainer. We’ll be in touch.”

  “And if I refuse?”

She smiled at him and leaned in, kissing him hard on the lips. When he leaned into it, she pulled away. He looked at her, not able to hide his surprise. “Don’t do that, Tommy,” she said. “They have enough on you to put you away for a lot of years.” She stood and began to walk away before turning to look at him one last time. “You know, I had planned to seduce you… it’s too bad,” she said, leaving.
