Nick made his way to the lobby. It was early evening, the sun just about to set behind the buildings.

He stopped at the desk, the clerk pointing out the woman seated on the bench, arms hugging herself.

  “Miss?” Nick asked.

Her head shot up, revealing black streaks down her face from her mascara. He knelt in front of her. “I’m Detective Nick Butler. Are you all right?”

  She shook her head.

  “Do you need medical attention?”

She shook her head again, her eyes wide with fear.

She trembled, her hands shaking as she pulled a phone out of her blue hoodie pocket.

  “What’s your name?”

“Heather.” She said it so quietly he barely heard her.

She touched her phone, looking for something.

“Heather, I’m a detective. If you’re having a boyfriend issue, you should file a report with an officer.”

She turned the phone and shoved it in front of him. In large red letters above a bed on a cream-colored wall were the words: You will die bitch.

He straightened, taking the phone off her. “Where is this?”

  “My bedroom,” she whispered.

“What was used to write this on the wall?” He heard his own voice go hard.

A choke escaped her throat. “My dog’s…”

“Do you know who would threaten you?” He practically growled.

  She shook her head.

  “An ex-boyfriend? Husband? Anyone?”

She didn’t stop the back and forth motion of her head.

  “Has this happened before?”

“Not this, but other stuff.” She pulled a tissue out of her pocket. “Why go after my dog?”

  “Have you filed reports previously?”

“I tried but no one would listen to me. It’s why I asked for a detective this time.”

Nick shot a dark look over to the desk clerk whose brows were raised up to the ceiling at the revelation that officers had ignored her. The man picked up the phone and started to murmur. He probably contacted Chief.

“Can you find my stalker?” she asked.

“We’re going to look into this, Heather, and we’ll do everything we can to find this person,” Nick said. He helped her off the bench. “Let’s get you warmed up. Jones, call Detective Jordan Hayes and get him in here. What’s your last name?”

  “Hardewick.”

Nick led her back to his impersonal desk, wishing he had a more appropriate room to bring a woman who was scared half out of her mind and yet be able to take information. He sat down, pulled a new yellow steno pad out of his desk and his pen out of his jacket pocket. “Tell me what’s been going on, Heather.”
