In the Line of Duty Page 28

by Carolyn Arnold

Seven officers holding rifles stood in a row.

  “Right face!”

The officers turned to their right.

  “Ready!”

  The officers cocked their rifles.

  “Aim!”

The officers lifted their rifles toward the sky.

  “Fire!”

The sergeant and officers repeated this two more times.

  “Ready, aim, fire.”

A brief silence was followed by the sound of bagpipes playing “Amazing Grace.”

Madison looked heavenward, not necessarily believing in God or religion, yet putting faith in the existence of a Greater Being, even at a low time such as this when most blamed him—or her.

The clouds moved across the sky, and she thought of her friend. She squeezed her eyes shut and then opened them again.

Rest in peace, my brother. You may be lost, but you will never be forgotten.

  Letter for Law Enforcement

This book is dedicated to all the fine men and women who serve or have served in law enforcement and in memory of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

While some of you may view being a law enforcement officer as a job, there are many of you who feel it is your calling. You respect that the departments in which you serve are businesses, but that’s not what drives you. You wouldn’t live your life any other way.

You make your communities a safer place to live.

You put your lives on the line every shift.

You run toward gunfire while the rest of us run away.

You do all of it not for the praise or glory, but for your love of people.

Your job is most often a thankless one, but you carry it out anyway.

You are making a difference. It is because of you that the world isn’t in complete chaos, why there is some order and justice to be found.

You appreciate that how we live our lives affects more than just us and our community. It has a global impact.

For all of this, I thank you, and the world in its entirety should thank you, too.

You and your contribution will never be forgotten.

  Acknowledgments

My love for law enforcement officers runs deep, and without them this book wouldn’t even exist. Their insight and experience, their sacrifice of their time to answer my many questions, has made this book what it is.

Carl J. Harper, thank you for working through my pages of questions on ERS (SWAT) procedure. Your taking the time to gather such detailed responses really helped me to fully understand their roles and how they would go about doing things. And even after typing out pages of answers, you were still open when more questions popped up.

Stacy Eaton, you’ve been a tremendous help for years now by answering my questions as they come up, even reading through manuscripts to check that I had my procedures and terminology correct. Thank you.

I also would be amiss not to thank and acknowledge the amazing officers at London Police Services. Taking part in the Citizen’s Academy was a real treat. I was a part of the action on my ride-along with Greg Blumson on the scene of a death investigation. I put my hands on weapons and equipment used by various units. I toured the ERS and the Command Center vehicles. I met incredible people! Catherine Fountain, Tom Allen, Colleen Kelly, Andy Bakker, Angus Campbell, Chris Riley, Brad Lobsinger, Sam Page, Gary “Buzz” Bezaire, Ryan Valiquette, Jamie Porter, Marissa Thorburn, Sylvain Leclerc, Ryan Scrivens, Travis Wintjes, David Payette, Dave Ellyatt, John McDonald, and Chief John Pare. Being taught by you, being around you, was an amazing experience that has only added further credibility to my work. Also, I would like to thank Chris Carne for taking my husband on a ride-along and providing information on warrants and more. Laurie Legg, from the Forensic Identification Section with the Criminal Investigation Division, helped me get my facts straight with ballistics. Thank you. Terri Jackson, thank you for letting me watch you work on-scene and for giving me a tour of the I-dent vehicle. Greg Parrott, you approached me and offered to help me if I had any medical situations arise in my books. Little did you know that at the time I was working on a book in which someone passes out. Your EMS knowledge enabled me to add more depth to that scene.

Danielle Poiesz, your amazing talent for crafting my words, challenging me, and bringing out the best in my writing is appreciated, even when there are times I need to step away for a bit and drink a tea. Also, thank you to Morgan Marsicano, who proofread to ensure the final manuscript was perfect.

Overview of In the Line of Duty

He devoted his life to seeking justice. But would she get any for him?

It was an ordinary day for police officer Barry Weir. It was the end of shift, he was tired, and he just wanted to get home to his wife and kids. But someone had other plans for him, shooting him down and forcing him to make the ultimate sacrifice.

When news of Weir’s murder reaches the department, it leaves Detective Madison Knight and every cop in the Stiles PD itching for revenge. It cuts Madison’s boyfriend, colleague, and Weir’s childhood friend, Troy Matthews, deepest of all, driving him away from everyone he loves just when they need one another the most.

With evidence pointing to a gang-related drive-by, Madison and her team investigate the town’s seedy underbelly in search of justice for their fallen brother. But the deeper they dig, the more convoluted the case becomes. Now they need to figure out if this was a random shooting as part of a gang initiation, a straight-up hate crime, or a targeted kill. But with members of the Stiles PD under attack, they have to do it fast…before more officers pay with their lives.
