Ness then turned to the shadowy individual whom sat in the adjacent Chrysler and smiled at him whilst he pressed one of these secretive buttons which instantly sent up a steel sheet on every window and sealed the two lawmen within a wall of protective metal. These thick steel sheets had small horizontal viewing slits for the occupants of the Scarab so that they could easily see outside whilst protected whereas external viewers could not see inside its sealed and darkened interior. Thinner protective metal shields also suddenly shot down from the Scarabs silver body frame and covered each of the Elegant Mess’s four reinforced tire’s, giving the Scarab an instantaneous armadillo like appearance which shocked all whom viewed this miraculous transformation.

The startled Merlyo could not understand what was happening as the interior of the Scarab suddenly went dark and he attempted to process this confusing situation whilst his eyes hastily adjusted to the newly acquired environment. The stunned Machiano could not believe his eyes as he witnessed the silver Elegant Mess instantly transform from an ugly roadster into a tank that looked more at home within the muddy battlefields of Europe rather than downtown Cleveland. He instinctively fired his powerful tommy gun at the steel beast’s Scarab shaped bonnet and worryingly saw his many bullets harmlessly ricochet in all directions within a hail of colourful sparks. His predictably violent reaction was instantly copied by the two adjacent Chryslers as they too started to fire there tommy guns as the steel beast which had the same useless effect upon its apparently impervious shell, sending deadly bullets back at the aggressors in all directions.

As sparks erupted from all sides into the darkened interior of the Scarab, Ness pressed another button on his panel of surprises which instantly sprayed the nearby Chryslers with a clear liquid from either side the unseen underside of the Scarab. This unknown flammable liquid had been squirted from a long running pipe that ran the entire length of the underside of the Scarab’s silver shell and smelt distinctively like gasoline. The stern looking Ness then pressed another button which instantly fired out two giant flame bursts from either side of the unseen underside of the Scarab, instantly lighting up the two adjacent sprayed Chryslers within fireball of immense ferocity.

As the mobsters within the two burning Chryslers stopped firing and chaotically screamed in pain, Ness ignited the newly modified and powerful engine of the Scarab and drove it forward, powering effortlessly through the firing Machiano to send the mobster flying over the bonnet and roof like a human ragdoll. The triumphantly tank like Elegant Mess then powered away through the rainy streets as the three other Chryslers hastily chased after it in a hot pursuit, rain quickly concealing there movements within a wall of spray.

The defeated two Chryslers burned brilliantly within the sightless rain as there eight passengers frantically ran out into the streets as the desperately attempted to put out the flames that now liberally coated their individual bodies. The mobsters desperately ran around and rolled on the street and in the nearby puddles as they each separately tried to subdue the fearsome flames that Ness had miraculously produced from his harmless looking automobile. As they did so the shocked and infuriated Polizzi shouted his cruel instructions at his driver, angry at Ness’s ingenuity and furious at his loss of his beloved and expensive automobiles “Jesus! What the hell is that cock sucker playing at!? He’s transformed that piece of shit into a god dame tank! Pick up Machiano and then get after that asshole! While you’re at it do me a favour and drive through those useless burning fucks of mine! COME ON! COME ON! HE’S GETTING AWAY!”

The driver instantly did as he was instructed to do and powered through the flame ridden screaming men whom Polizzi thought never appeared to cease in disappointing him. The LaSalle then dramatically slowed as the tough Machiano hastily hopped onto the outside of its chasse, only for it to speed off again whilst he secured himself upon its sleek black frame. Machiano was determined to make a mesne for his failure and wished to prove to his master that he could destroy Ness and his newly crafted silver monstrosity. Polizzi then hastily handed him a tommy gun through the open window and shouted with a venomous tone that the well versed mobster knew only too well “WHEN WE GET CLOSE ENOUGH I WANT YOU TO SHOOT HIS TIRES! AND AIM STRIGHT OR ELSE I’LL CUT THE OTHER SIDE OF YOU GOD DAMN FACE! CAPICHE!”

The angry Polizzi then also irritatingly discarded his smouldering cigar out of the window because it had instantaneously lost all its pleasurably soothing value thanks to the surprisingly defiant Ness. As the LaSalle screeched off down the street, the two remaining flaming wrecks of the defeated Chryslers exploded with a tremendous force and acknowledged to all on looking civilians that there was war upon the streets of Cleveland tonight. Polizzi gritted his teeth together in frustration as he heard these explosion rip through the moist atmosphere because his wonderful automobile army was being systematically destroyed by the fallen golden boy of Cleveland. A man whom he considered to be little more than an annoying publicity seeker but now he had crossed the line by attacked his beloved Mayfield Road mobs beating heart, its army of beloved road ruling automobiles.

Meanwhile back inside the silver Scarab Ness frantically drove through the sightless rain as he struggled to see the road ahead of him because every time the street lights went out of view the darkness pervaded his already restricted vison. The chasing pack doggedly pursued there defensively weaving silver target as it skilfully managed to avoid the periodic civilian automobiles that unwittingly blocked its path. Most of these human motorised obstacles thankfully got well out of the way of the chaotic scenes of flashing gunfire because many instantly deduced that there was a probable mobster turf war taking place upon the money soaked inner city streets of Cleveland. Ness then strategically attempted to speedily get to the lesser populated streets of the outer industrial area because he feared civilians being caught in the crossfire until suddenly the less crowded and unfamiliar street under him went up and then down sharply. This caused all the automobiles to dramatically fly in the air one by one in a silent moment of grim anticipation which seemed to last longer than it actually was. As the large Scarab impacted the tarmac’s harsh surface it caused yet more sparks to ignite from his tough, underside steel frame and sent both Ness and Merlyo uncomfortably off their seats and up in to the air. The chasing pack of four mobster automobiles followed this with a quadrilogy of spectacular impacts, recreating the uncomfortable moment Ness and Merlyo had just experienced in all its painful glory.

The ever calculating Ness made sure not to move onto the oncoming sporadic traffic for fear of causing an accident and attempted to simply outrace the chasing group. As he alarmingly saw the shooting mobsters quickly catching up with them, he then shouted to Merlyo as gunfire hit the Scarab’s outer shell again, causing flashes of light to erupt within its sealed interior “Get the revolver and shoot out of the windows! When you’re out of bullets open the leather cover on the floor because there’s a Gatling gun underneath it!” Merlyo could not believe what he was hearing as he hastily opened the glove compartment to reveal Ness’s revolver and shouted as he made his way into the back of the bullet riddled silver Scarab “A what!?” Ness shouted his reply as yet more bullets reigned down from the numerous firing tommy guns which impacted the silver shell, creating a deafening noise within the Scarab’s sealed interior “A VINTAGE CONFEDERACY GATLING GUN! USE IT!” The adrenalin fuelled Merlyo then made a mental note to himself that if they survived tonight’s epic drama he would have to seriously question Ness’s recent choices of secret hobbies to deduce what he was spending his money on.

He then hastily started to fire through the various viewing slits within each window whilst Ness defensively swerved from side to side as he attempted to both avoid the incoming fire and ram the two sandwiching Chrysler’s. After both men’s attempts at trying to stop the quickly closing Chryslers failed, Ness then pressed another button upon his art deco panel and hoped that his next trick would eliminate another one of the pursuing Mayfield Road Mobs inferior automobiles. A sm
all compartment of concealed caltrops then opened form the underside rear of the Scarab which released its deadly sparkling contents onto the road behind it and towards both the chasing Chrysler and LaSalle. The rear pursuing Chrysler’s tires instantly exploded upon impacting these caltrops which caused it to then violently swerve off to the right and then uncontrollably swerve back off to the left. This chaotic motion in turn caused the closing LaSalle to quickly veer off to one side in a successful attempt to avoid the chaotically moving Chrysler as the doomed automobile uncontrollably ploughed through some closed wooden vegetable stalls.

The numerous flying vegetables coated the nearby LaSalle and its accompanying Machiano, in an assortment of freshly picked vegetables of all varieties whilst exploding tomatoes covered the driver’s window and forced him to engage his windscreen wipers to avoid being blinded by the unforeseen red attack. The infuriated Polizzi could only helplessly watch on as yet another one of his beloved Chryslers fatally flipped up onto its side before coming to a sparking halt in the rain soaked distance. The angered Polizzi could not help but vocalise his immense fury as he opened his jacket, grabbed his trusty luger pistol and shouted directly into the worried looking driver’s ear “IF YOU LOOSE HIM YOUR A FUCKING DEAD MAN! DEAD MAN! YA HEAR ME! DEAD! DEAD! DEAD!”

The enraged Polizzi then stuck his head out of the other window and fired, along with the loyal Machiano, at the distant Scarabs shielded wheels which created a multitude of tremendous sparks of light to develop as metal impacted metal. The Scarabs shields held up against the relentless onslaught of the angered mobsters as Ness suddenly swerved to the left to try and avoid Polizzi’s targeted fury, knowing that the tire shields where not as thick as the rest of the silver automobiles superior armour. This caused all three pursuing automobiles to follow Ness’s daring turn and they did so with ease because the heavily upgraded Scarab still was limited in its movement capability compared to the chasing mobster’s automobiles.

This momentary delay in the firing had given Merlyo the perfect opportunity to discard his empty revolver and rip open the protective leather bound sheet that supposedly contained a vintage confederacy Gatling gun. To his amazement a small but new looking and polished golden Gatling gun instantly popped up and into the air upon a slowly extending metal pole and, as Ness accelerated again and swerved defensively from side to side, he shouted his instructions back to the hesitant detective “Use the small wheel and roll it up through the sunroof!” After a brief moment of confirming what his unbelieving eyes now saw, Merlyo started to frantically spin the small wheel on the extending metal pole which started to lift the Gatling gun towards the sealed sunroof. This forced the detective to momentarily pause its ascent in order to slide the clear sunroof back so that the weapon would be able to be elevated out of the shielded automobile. As the gleaming golden weapon quickly elevated out of the silver Scarab with every frantic turn of the tired detective to reveal its violent presence, gunfire erupted around them yet again as the two resurgent Chryslers and the LaSalle closed in yet again.

Merlyo then quickly hopped on the small but crude metal steps that had elevated along with the metal pole from the floor and kept his head down as he carefully stuck it up and into the cold, rainy night air which mercilessly buffeted the back of his head. Ness was concerned over his colleague as he was now no longer within the protective shell of the Scarab and only had the small Gatling gun fire guard to protect him from incoming bullets. He then shouted at him to inflict as much pain as he could upon there pursuers whilst also ensuring that he should remain hidden behind the weapons modest gun shield “Keep your head down and shoot! Get them off our tail because I don’t know how long the Scarab can hold on!”

The newly determined Merlyo then hastily aimed the old civil war weapon at the nearest target and started the turn the wheel like firing mechanism which caused vibrant flashes to erupt from its many barrels. Numerous sparks instantly appeared to effortlessly rip through the chosen Chrysler’s bonnet as the old weapon found its mark and ignited the automobiles fuel tanks with such tremendous force that it caused all three remaining automobiles to shudder as it exploded. The immense power of the explosion caused the interior of the sealed Elegant Mess to instantly light up with the fiery light of the defeated Chryslers explosive end before it rained down shards of deadly hot metal upon all whom where in the immediate area. Merlyo was so surprised at the power the old gun that he momentarily looked at it with a new found sense of pride and speculated how on earth the south could have possibly lost the civil war with such tremendously unstoppable weapons such as this.

Ness could not help but smile as he silently congratulated himself upon a bargain purchase that he had acquired many moons ago at a vintage sale and thanked his imaginatively creative mind for helping him to resurrect such a devastatingly impressive weapon. This momentary speculation by both triumphant lawmen was rudely interrupted as gunfire erupted from the final two Mayfield Road mobster automobiles whom where now even more doggedly determined to put a stop to Ness’s interference into their affairs upon seeing the spectacular fiery demise of their colleagues. Ness then shouted to Merlyo whom had stopped firing because both pursuing automobiles had now cleverly moved in towards the Scarab in order to eliminate the Gatling guns limited scope of fire “Hold on and keep you head down!” Ness then quietly spoke to himself whilst considering his limited options “Safety Director Ha! Whatever!” before he did something totally unexpected and turned into the oncoming traffic and sped in between the lanes as automobiles desperately swerved to keep out of his way.

He frantically honked his horn as he did this to ensure that the oncoming civilians had more than enough time to move out of the way but a couple of close calls caught the silver Scarabs frame which sparked as the occasionally unfortunate oncoming automobile glanced of it. The LaSalle and final Chrysler also turned into the oncoming traffic and swerved in and out of the automobiles which chaotically shot off in all directions to avoid a dangerously violent impact. The Mayfield Road Mob cared little for the civilians and continued to shoot at Ness’s silver Scarab regardless and caused a line of pure chaos to slowly develop behind the speeding group. Realising that this was the fatal error of an otherwise desperate man, Ness then hastily turned back onto another side street and continued the deadly chase within the more vacant back streets of Cleveland’s industrial docklands.

This momentary break had given Merlyo the well needed space to then again fire the impressive Gatling gun upon the chasing pair and as he did so Machiano, and what was left of the Mayfield Road mob, fired back which caused the detective to instinctively cease firing and lower his head. As the speeding silver Scarab made its way deeper into a smaller darkened street whereby the brick walls appeared to worryingly come ever closer to its sides which in turn caused a break in the firing as all three automobiles followed each other in unison. The Scarab was leading the group whilst the LaSalle was quickly closing in behind it and the final Chrysler was at the back in a long running train of mass destruction. Polizzi then gave some instructions to his driver as they closed in to the superiorly armed Scarab “That’s it! Move in closer so that he can’t fire that blasted gun! I’m going to get Machiano to jump on it as we exit this street!”

The driver again loyally obeyed his master and moved ever closer to the fleeing Scarab as it upturned mass amounts of dirt and garbage within its wake. Polizzi then took Machiano’s tommy gun and gave him his luger pistol and shouted his orders to the brutish mobster “WHEN WE GET CLOSE I WANT YOU TO JUMP! KILL THEM BOTH!” The concerned looking Machiano nodded in silent agreement and prepared himself for his dramatic jump into the unknown as he saw the street exit quickly approaching. As the LaSalle got ever closer to the predictably slowing Scarab, which was about to leave the restrictive back street and turn back onto an openly larger street, Machiano dramatically made his move and jumped.

As he flew through the rain soaked air for what seemed like a lifetime he briefly contemplated his u
nflinching loyalty to Polizzi, the very man whom had permanently scarred his face with his own flick knife. He wondered if this blind loyalty would be the end of him but pushed such divisive thoughts to the back of his mind as he frantically analysed the many areas of which to grab onto the unsightly silver monstrosity as it quickly approached. He then landed upon the Scarabs rear silver frame and desperately clutched onto anything that would allow him to remain upon its bullet riddled silver body and grabbed the very thing that he had previously targeted, the sides of the automobile’s rear grated engine. As the startled Merlyo saw this he then watched in horror as the lightening quick goon quickly withdrew the luger pistol and fired directly at him, causing the detective to instinctively shield himself behind the protective Gatling gun.

As sparks flew from the confederacy weapon’s shielding, Ness suddenly slowed and took a sharp left into the larger street ahead which caused Machiano to drop the luger as he was uncontrollably thrust forwards with immense speed. As he slid helplessly across the long surface of the elongated silver Scarab, Merlyo tried to aim the Gatling gun at him before the deadly goon was upon him but it was too late as the determined Machiano desperately grabbed the detective’s head as he was thrust upon him. Machiano was determined not to let go and be given an untimely end upon the quickly moving street below him and as the two fiercely struggled in the rain, the chasing Chrysler did not fire on them after being signalled not to do so by the concerned Polizzi. He was unwilling to sacrifice the very man whom he had adopted only a few years ago and was convinced that he would succeed in his task unlike his other men whom had consistently failed him.
