A NOTE ON THE AUTHOR
Beau Riffenburgh is a historian specialising in
exploration, particularly that of the Antarctic, Arctic,
and Africa. Born in California, he earned his doctorate
at the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of
Cambridge, where he is currently the editor of
Polar Record, the world's oldest journal of polar
research. He is the author of the highly regarded
The Myth of the Explorer and editor of the
Encyclopedia of the Antarctic, intended to be
the most comprehensive work of reference ever
published about the Antarctic. He is currently
working on a book about Douglas Mawson's
Australasian Antarctic Expedition.
A NOTE ON THE TYPE
The text of this book is set in Linotype Sabon,
named after the type founder, Jacques Sabon. It was
designed by Jan Tschichold and jointly developed by
Linotype, Monotype and Stempel, in response to
a need for a typeface to be available in identical
form for mechanical hot metal composition and
hand composition using foundry type.
Tschichold based his design for Sabon roman on a
font engraved by Garamond, and Sabon italic on
a font by Granjon. It was first used in 1966 and
has proved an enduring modern classic.
