“No more corn on the cob vibrators?” Noah asked.

“Oh, we may keep those, they’re one of our best sellers.” Beverly winked, and suddenly her tears were gone. “So here’s to our new future.”

“Starting with this.” Christian reached behind the filing cabinet and pulled out a sledgehammer. “Bobby, would you like to do the honors?” He held out the sledgehammer at arm’s length and nodded meaningfully in the direction of the two peepshow booths.

“With pleasure,” Bobby replied, heart bursting with happiness. For him. They were doing this for him. For themselves, too, but for him, because he was a part of them, and they were a part of him. A fucking weird family, but a family nonetheless.

“Damn, let me at it too,” Dylan said, clapping Bobby on the shoulder and kissing his temple.

Between the six of them and the sledgehammer, they had both booths reduced to a pile of rubble in minutes.

Later that night, Sandra brought them two huge pizzas and they all sat on the floor together to eat, surrounded by stacks of DVD cases in the process of being reunited with their discs so that they could be boxed up and sold away.

“So will you stay?” Beverly asked Bobby quietly while everyone else was distracted, laughing and shouting at some lewd story Max was telling. Bobby’s roommates, coworkers, friends, even his boyfriend, all here for him when it counted, all working together to make him feel comfortable and do some general good in the world. His people. He belonged.

No question about it. “Yeah,” Bobby said. “I will. Definitely.”

Heidi Belleau was born and raised in small town New Brunswick, Canada. She now lives in the rugged oil-patch frontier of Northern BC with her husband, an Irish ex-pat whose long work hours in the trades leave her plenty of quiet time to write. She has a degree in history from Simon Fraser University with a concentration in British and Irish studies; much of her work centered on popular culture, oral folklore, and sexuality, but she was known to perplex her professors with non-ironic papers on the historical roots of modern romance novel tropes. (Ask her about Highlanders!) Her writing reflects everything she loves: diverse casts of characters, a sense of history and place, equal parts witty and filthy dialogue, the occasional mythological twist, and most of all, love—in all its weird and wonderful forms. When not writing, you might catch her trying to explain British television to her daughter or sipping a drink at her favourite coffee shop.
