You Can't Hide Page 14

by Wendy Davy

“What does that have to do with me?”

“Everything. You want to travel, right?”

  “I’ve always wanted to.”

“When I showed you the self-defense moves, you picked up on them right away. You can do the things I’m unable to do. We can work together as a team.”

Cara couldn’t imaging seeing Gage on an everyday basis, and not be his partner in every sense of the word. “I don’t know…”

“Is it the library? You wouldn’t want to leave your career in Baltimore?”

“It’s not that. I’ve been wanting to get out in the world and see more, experience more. That’s what led me to Columbia in the first place.”

“Then, what is it?” He swallowed and his pulse throbbed at his temple.

“You’re asking me to be your colleague?”

A smile lifted his lips as an understanding crossed his features. “I guess I didn’t explain myself fully.” He took up her hands in his, careful not to touch the scrapes from earlier. “Yes, I do want to work with you. But, that’s only part of my proposal.”

Cara looked up into his turquoise eyes, daring to dream as he turned her palms up, and kissed each one in turn. She swallowed, moistening her suddenly dry throat. “And the other part?”

“I want more than a colleague.” Gage released her hands and eased his arms around her waist. “It took almost losing you, again, to realize I want that future you’ve been talking about. The future God has planned for not only me, but for us as a Christ-centered husband and wife.”

Cara soaked in his words, daring to believe she’d heard him correctly.

“He’s shown me He does care and there’s hope no matter the circumstances.”

“In that case”—Cara slipped her arms around his neck—”I would love to be your colleague. Your wife. And, everything else in between.”

Gage’s tense shoulders relaxed. His smile showed his relief as he leaned forward and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead.

“You missed.” Cara tilted up her chin. “My lips are further down.”

A touch of humor entered his gaze. “Don’t worry. I know exactly where to find them.” He dipped his head and pressed his lips to hers, sealing their future with the promise of love, desire and untold adventures.
