Thankfully, they were just cuddling—though Santa had a strong suspicion that they’d been up to much naughtier things in the not-too-distant past. The shit-eating grin on Cassius’s face told him that much. He continued to watch as Cassius moved to press a kiss to Carina’s hair, and they both smiled. Truly contented smiles. It must have been catching—Santa realised he too, was beaming from ear to ear. Whether or not they knew it, Santa wasn’t sure, but Cassius and Carina were mated. And shifters mate for life. They’d realize that soon enough.

Satisfied his work was done, he was just about to put the snow globe back in its place when Mrs. Claus entered the room. “Hello, my dear,” she said, standing beside his chair and kissing his cheek. “What are you up to?”

He indicated the snow globe. “Just making sure my team is happy.”

Mrs. Claus looked into the globe, which had not yet deactivated, and said, “Is that... Cassius Cupid?”

“It sure is,” Santa replied, grabbing his wife’s hand and giving it a squeeze. “And he looks pretty happy, doesn’t he?”

Mrs. Claus gave an absentminded nod as she continued to peer into the globe, watching the action unfold. Squinting, a frown crept across her face and she turned to her husband, who wore a smug look upon his face.

Mrs. Claus’s frown morphed into a knowing smile, and she chucked her husband under the chin. “You’re a very clever man, Mr. Claus. Setting Cupid up with another shifter was a stroke of genius.”

“I know,” he said, sitting back in his chair with a contended sigh. “Now I know Cassius will be happy year after year, not just right now.”

Putting the snow globe away, Mrs. Claus climbed into Santa’s lap and put her arms around him. “You old softie, you.”

“Hey,” he said, twining his fingers with hers, “if I can make them even half as happy as you make me, then I’ll be truly content.”

A tear came to Mrs. Claus’s eye, and she leaned in and kissed her husband. “Just one of the many reasons I love you, my dear.”

  “And I you, my dear.”
