(Saturday, May 10th / Day twenty of The World.)
(Rani Lamkin reporting to her V-MMORG Supervisor.)
“You’ve gotta do something Doug,” Rani demanded as she burst into her V-MMORG supervisor’s office. She was so pissed off that she almost couldn’t take it, “They fucking killed me!”
“Hey, Rani,” Doug pleasantly said, waving one of her coworkers away to give them some privacy. The V-MMORG Admin, he noted, was still wearing her skin-tight gaming bodysuit. He realized she must have been really pissed off to have stalked through the entire office in that, “take a seat and fill me in on what happened.” Professionally ignoring the grimace that crossed her face, he spun around and pulled a soda from the mini-fridge in his office and held up a bottle of water and soda for her to choose.
“Water,” Rani said, catching the bottle he tossed her.
“I take it this has to do with your Startum Ironwolf assignment,” he prompted as he sat back in his chair to listen.
“That’s an entirely different situation that we need to have a serious discussion about,” Rani fumed in-between gulps of water, “It was his friend Domenic that had his Elemental pets kill me once he heard that I’d been the one to report his Moonshine Elementals in to be fixed.”
“Domenic?” Doug repeated, the confusion clear in his tone as he sat forward and pulled up his keyboard, “I don’t recognize the name-”
“Ugh, his player name is Vengeance Burnslinger,” Rani hurriedly clarified, annoyed that she’d used the asshole’s in-real-life name.
“Ah, yes,” Doug recalled, leaning back in his chair, “the Moonshine Elemental fella.” He shook his head at the concept. “It’s too bad we had to gimp the creation; I hate having to stomp on players that are being inventive.”
“Inventive,” Rani asked, giving him a look that said, are you crazy? “those things would’ve unbalanced the entire game.”
“True,” Doug said, “which is why we toned down their explosive effect,” he sadly shook his head as his voice took on a winsome tone, “still ingenious.”
“Well, that ingenious asshole killed me when he heard that I’d reported him,” Rani complained as Doug frowned.
“He knew you were an Admin at the time,” Doug asked as Rani flinched at the look her boss was giving her.
“A few of Startum Ironwolf’s guildmates figured out my identity,” Rani grudgingly admitted, “and someone happened to mention that in front of Vengeance Burnslinger.”
“He should’ve known better than using force against one of our official representatives,” Doug said as a frown came to his lips, “Luckily, we have a procedure already in place for that. I’ll let Justin’s people know to set up a ban on his account for forty-eight hours.” He gave her a shrug. “We can’t have players wantonly killing Admins.”
“That’s it, you’re not going to kill him for assaulting me,” Rani asked incredulously, sitting up in her chair to glare at her boss, “It freaking hurt like hell and, on top of that, I lost all of my gear.”
“Lost all of your gear,” Doug gave her a confused look as he sat up and began typing at his keyboard again, “gear should be damaged but not destroyed-”
“The asshole killed me with an Acid Elemental,” Rani said, the anger clear in her voice, “and even if any of my gear did happen to survive, my gravestone is in the middle of an Orc Horde.”
“That would do it,” Doug agreed as he thoughtfully sat back again in his chair to consider the issue, “Hmmm, Acid Elemental, not a bad replacement for the Moonshine Elementals-” Seeing the daggers she was sending his way, he waved the comment away, “So, what is this other issue that we need to have a serious discussion about?” making air quotes.
“Startum Ironwolf is a way bigger threat to The World’s balance than Vengeance Burnslinger’s Moonshine Elementals could ever be,” Rani said in exasperation as she went on a rant about the day’s events.
Doug silently listened to Rani as she explained the Dark Lance spell that Startum had used to stop the horde. As she was explaining that
tens of thousands of Orcs had been slaughtered in a matter of minutes, her supervisor began poking away at his keyboard. Calling up her perspective, he rolled back the video recording of her gameplay until he’d reached the part that she was reporting on.
“Let’s move to the conference room, so you can walk me through the chain of events leading up to the fight and the battle itself,” Doug said, standing up smoothly and motioning Rani to follow him as they moved the discussion into the conference room next to his office. This was the room that the team used to discuss important in-game events.
A number of her coworkers curiously raised their eyebrows as the pair hurried to the conference room. Rani waited for her supervisor to remotely login to his own computer to set up the sync. Once everything was ready, he handed her the keyboard and mouse so she could walk him through the chain of events. One way or another, Rani silently swore, Startum was going down. With a fervor, she began describing the series of events that led up to the massive overkill as several of the veteran Admins on the team wandered over to listen in on her report.
“He stopped an invading Orc horde,” Susan exclaimed from where she stood next to Frank as they watched the video playing on the main screen from the doorway.
“How many Orcs did they kill,” Frank asked, squinting across the room trying to read the enemy kill count on the screen.
“Fifty-seven thousand three hundred and ten,” Susan said, clearly stunned, “in what looks to be fifteen minutes.”
“No shit,” Frank exclaimed as his mouth dropped open in shocked amazement
“Do you mind,” Rani asked, clearly irked as she glared at her coworkers. She couldn’t wait to see the smug look wiped off of Startum’s supercilious face. Unfortunately, that outburst had the entire team rushing over to see what the hell everyone was talking about.
As the team began discussing the impossibility of it all, Doug was focusing on the different parts of the battle as he thoughtfully observed how the spells were being used. Rani explained to the newcomers how the player in question had used a relatively common spell like Dark Lance to cause such unheard-of slaughter. The main point Rani focused on pushing was the need to either completely remove or severely reduce the spell’s effectiveness with an Emergency Hot Fix. To her surprise, the veteran Admins were against the idea. Not that any of that mattered, she sourly thought, she knew Doug would see it her way. The impromptu discussion was brought to a halt to Rani’s surprise, when Doug closed the laptop and started to stand up.
