Planet-H: The End of the Beginning Page 32

by J. T. Winterlord

They were talking about two thugs massacred in their own apartment, but I didn’t feel like watching.

My only thought was that scum like that deserved all they got. I was rummaging in the refrigerator when they showed photos of Kurl and his minion, but I was too distracted to see them.

If I had been more attentive I would have heard that the whole business appeared to be a brutal settling of scores. Perhaps some king of experimental weapon had been used. The internal organs of the two criminals had been reduced to a pulp.

I watched again as they reported a hurricane somewhere and then switched off.

I went down to the office. Working was the only thing that could distract me.

I didn’t feel like it or better yet I simply didn’t care, but I didn’t want to stay in the house all day mulling over what had happened.

I sat in the chair. There was no one there - just what I needed as I didn’t want to talk.

I was surprised when Sammy came through my door; I didn’t know whether to love him or otherwise.

  I could only ask,

  "Why? Sammy ... why?"

He gave a timid smile, spread his arms slightly and said,

"I'm sorry Kate, the only answer that comes to mind would be pretty stupid and senseless ... but probably her moment had come. I'm immensely sorry Kate but you know that we are all with you.”

I didn’t know what to say. I wanted to be alone, but Sammy showed no sign of leaving. "You should come over Kate, we are all waiting.”

"I have absolutely no desire to move Sammy. Let’s do it another time please."

  Sammy didn’t move. He said,

"Better that you come Kate because I have a promise to keep and I always keep my promises.”
