by Sharon Joss
“I hope I never have to see you again.” Her voice held the quaver of near-tears. She couldn’t get away from me fast enough.
A moment later, the next client climbed the stairs and the traumatic scene was repeated. Each person as desperate as the last, each banishment an exercise in pain and anguish for both demon and master. And in the end, every one of them left furious with me.
I felt like a monster. I tried everything I could think of to avoid hurting the little guys, but nothing worked. Only two people showed up who had not yet named their djinn, and those were the only ones which disappeared silently, like they were supposed to. Maybe the mere act of naming a djinn somehow hooked the creature into its new master. It was the only thing I could think of, because banishing the djemon seemed to cause too much agony for both of them. I wasn’t sure if I could stand one more tortured scream.
If this was what being the Hand of Fate was all about, I wanted no part of it.
