If Your Wife Only Knew Page 25

“All I can say is you have changed—”

“I’ve changed? Look, give me my daughter. I’ve got important things to do.”

“Nothing is more important than me. Nothing! You go and have your little fun, your little pity party with that man that’s over there. I can see the ninja looking out the window right now.”

“That’s a lie because my room is in the back of the house.” She laughed. “You got the nerve to be jealous. That’s my mama in the window making sure nothing is going down out here.”

“Tell her she don’t have to worry. Nothing is happening. Literally nothing is going on.”

“You got that right. We have no business but our daughter. The past is over, Rashad. You may as well get used to it. I do not belong to you anymore.”

“But what if I need a place to stay if she kicks me out?”

  “Ask your female Shrek!”

Rashad left in a huff. And she turned around and went back inside the house.

It was the next morning. The meeting was about to start. Alexis sat in a guest chair in Kiara’s office. She wore a black suit with a white blouse. Her hair cascaded down her back. Alexis was poised and felt calm. So when Nicole entered the office and loudly gasped when she spotted Alexis, she felt energized and satisfied like someone was looking over her shoulder.

“Have a seat,” Kiara told Nicole.

  “What’s this about?”

  “Please sit down.”

“I don’t want to sit down.”

“You may not have a choice. Sit down please.”

“OK, but I feel like you’re double-teaming me.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about, but if you’d just calm down and be seated, we can get this meeting started.”

Nicole nervously sat on the edge of her chair and clutched a university-owned tablet to her chest. For a minute, she resembled the quiet and insecure young woman Kiara first hired.

“Nicole, as you know, you were hired last May as the media coordinator for the communications department. And you understood from the beginning that during the first six months of employment, your job performance, skills, and adaptability to the workplace would be closely evaluated.”

  “Yeah, what about it?”

“I’m here to inform you that you didn’t make probation and today is your last day. It just didn’t work out. Alexis?”

Alexis took her cue and presented Nicole with the letter.

Nicole snatched the letter from Alexis and quickly reviewed it. Her hands were shaking.

“This is crazy. I-I did an excellent job. I covered all the events that you told me to do, and I wrote a ton of feature stories and co-produced videos that got good coverage. I’m more than qualified.”

“If you can recall, when you first came to this job you received an offer letter that stated you could be terminated for any reason. You signed it. Do you need me to pull it from the file?”

“I bet I know the real reason for this so-called termination.” Nicole rose to her feet and began pacing. Her spike heels clicked against the floor. “I don’t agree with this action. I can see it if I was someone who didn’t come to work half the time. Or one who didn’t do her work.”

“Half the time you didn’t work,” Alexis murmured.

“And why is she here? She doesn’t even like me, and never has.”

“Nicole, this has nothing to do with anyone liking you or not liking you. It’s business, not personal. Now sign and date the letter at the bottom. I will need you to clear out your desk and hand in your keys, badge, and any other university-owned equipment. Give everything to Alexis.”

  “Including that tablet,” Alexis said.

Nicole laid angry eyes on Kiara. She wanted to smack her but she knew that doing so would result in more serious trouble. She eyed her boss’s slightly protruding belly. She walked up to her and reached out and tried to touch her stomach, but Kiara screamed then leaped from her chair.

  “What are you doing?”

  “Whose child is this?”

  “W-what?”

“Whose baby is it, Kiara? Tell me.”

  “That’s none of your business.”

“That’s because the baby you’re carrying doesn’t belong to your husband. I heard you and Mr. Osborne talking in the stairway that day. I know his voice. I heard him ask you if your baby was his. I wonder how Rashad would feel if he knew that?”

Alexis’s eyes enlarged. She couldn’t believe how devious and spiteful Nicole was.

“Look, Kiara. I need this job and you know I need it. Now’s not the time for me to be going through this. But I will bargain with you. I know you’re mad because I am having Rashad’s child. But we are a team. I like my job and I need the income. It’s not fair to put it all on him.”

  “You’re sick—”

“More importantly, with your reputation, I know you wouldn’t want the university to know you could possibly be pregnant by another man. So if you let me keep my secret, keep my job, and let me stay, I will keep your secret. I won’t tell a soul. Is that a deal?”

  “That’s blackmail,” Alexis said.

“And you,” Nicole said, walking up to Alexis. “You have no room to talk, either. I’m not the only woman around this place who can get fired.”

Alexis shot Nicole a warning look. Nicole backed down. She wouldn’t want to break her promise to Rashad not to tell that he was Hayley’s father.

Nicole turned to Kiara. “Bottom line is I think you didn’t clearly think this through. I know you’re scared of people knowing your business. I have a way to solve this.”

She took her termination letter, spit on it, tore it up in dozens of pieces, then merrily tossed them up in the air.

“Effective immediately, I accept your offer of full-time employment as the media coordinator for this department. Alexis, be a sweetie and type up an official letter. I’d like a four percent raise, too. After the letter is ready, I will be more than happy to sign that one.”

Nicole walked toward Kiara’s door and started to open it.

“Don’t forget. Keep my secret and I will keep yours. And that’s a promise.”

Nicole whipped out her smartphone, clicked the camera app, pouted for a pose, pretended like she dropped a microphone, then twirled like she was gone with the wind fabulous, and walked out.

  Chapter 21

“Alexis, I need you to log into the HR system and cancel her termination.”

  “But—”

“This chick is playing hardball like she’s LeBron. I must do what I need to do until I can figure something out.”

Alexis could only stare at the shredded-up letter that was messily spread on Kiara’s floor like some losing lottery ticket.

“I don’t see how you can let her get away with this. You’re the boss. You tell her what to do.”

  “You don’t understand.”

“Oh, trust me, I understand. When people have secrets they’re trying to hide, they lose their common sense. I’m not talking about just you. It can happen to anybody. But if you let that nut bag do this to you now, you’re letting her win. People like her can’t win.”

“Okay, let’s think about this. If I insist on the firing, because technically I can still get rid of her even if she refuses to sign that letter, there’s no stopping her from spreading all my business throughout this campus.”

“Is it true, Kiara? You’re having another man’s child?”

  “I won’t know till it’s born. That’s all I can say.”

“Regardless, I’m really sorry about all this.” Alexis continued with her indirect apology. “I want Nicole to be out of here so bad you have no idea. She shouldn’t win.”

“And she won’t. It’s just that I know in my heart I don’t have to do anything bad against Nicole. She will get hers eventually.”

Kiara thought about her past actions and the price of revenge.

“It’s all a big mess. The Crips hate the Bloods. One gang member
kills another gang member. They retaliate. And the cycle continues. Which one of us can win if we keep up the cycle?”

Alexis couldn’t take it anymore. She excused herself. She immediately logged into the system that would allow her to cancel the termination. Her hands shook with every stroke across her keyboard.

Later, when Alexis was sitting at her desk eating her lunch, Shyla Perry quietly walked up to her. Alexis reached for her iPhone, but Shyla acted like she didn’t care.

“Hey, Alexis. I heard what happened earlier. What you eating? Looks like humble pie. Bwahahahaha.”

“Shyla, please go away. Just disappear.”

“I know you wish we’d disappear. But we’re here to stay. We are bosses.”

Alexis played with her cell phone.

“Oh, I forgot to tell you. You know I’m getting married next month. But somehow I accidentally lost your invite to the bridal shower. Well, I’ve decided to take the high road and I’ve had a change of heart. You’re welcome to attend as my special guest. Unless you’ll be too busy taking care of that bastard child you got—”

Alexis pulled back her knuckle and quickly popped Shyla. Her head snapped back. Shyla didn’t know what hit her. She moaned and caressed her jaw.

“Oh, my God! I can’t believe you did that.”

“And I can’t believe what you said. What a minute. Yes, I can believe it. Stupid bitches say stupid things.”

“You. Are about to be. In big trouble.” Shyla rested her hand on her jaw and limped toward Kiara’s office, even though Alexis never kicked her.

“Hold up a minute.” Alexis approached Shyla. She was holding her cell phone.

“Look! Violence is wack. There’s no justification for it. But so is going in on someone’s child.” Alexis placed the play button on her phone and turned up the volume. Shyla’s loud and catty voice could be heard instigating an argument with Alexis.

“Oh, I forgot to tell you. You know I’m getting married next month. But somehow I accidentally lost your invite to the bridal shower? Well, I’ve decided to take the high road and I’ve had a change of heart.”

Alexis stopped the recording right before it revealed the sound of her hitting the woman and Shyla screaming.

  “You conniving little violent-ass—”

“I was out of order and I am sorry for my behavior. Do you accept my apology, Shyla?”

“I accept it, but you’re still a conniving, violent-ass bitch.”

Shyla pouted, nursed her jaw, and slunk away from Alexis.

Kiara decided to take the rest of the afternoon off. First she checked with Alexis. The termination paperwork has been a pain in the neck to cancel, but it would be done. She knew she’d have to work on trying to give Nicole a raise, but nothing inside of her wanted to do it.

She continued in her vehicle and drove to the store where she’d tried to buy the hair accessories months ago but the cashier accidentally forgot to charge her.

Kiara’s heart felt a lot lighter after she took care of that business. And when she went home, she picked up the duplicate order that Nordstrom sent her, and returned it to the brick-and-mortar store unused and in its original packaging.

“If I keep this up,” she said to the cashier, who barely listened to her, “if I make the wrong things right, there’s nothing I can’t handle.”

  Chapter 22

On Thursday of that week, when Alexis was at work, she lowered her head and peered in the darkness underneath her desk. She placed one finger against her lips, signaling to Hayley that in order to win this little game they were playing she must be perfectly quiet. She handed her daughter a miniature flashlight to play with so it wouldn’t be so shadowy when she hid in the corner. The space under the elegant U-shaped hardwood desk offered ultimate privacy. Hayley would be safe from view.

All that morning Alexis tried to act like everything was normal. She had to do her job plus make sure Hayley wasn’t seen or heard.

When Shyla and Nicole scurried past mid-morning, Alexis felt Hayley playfully tapping her leg. Alexis ignored her. Hayley began to hum and persistently yanked on her mother’s skirt.

“What’s that noise?” Shyla asked, stopping to listen. “Did you hear that?”

“What noise? I didn’t hear anything.”

  “Lessie.”

Alexis wanted to correct Hayley but couldn’t.

“Hey, ladies,” Alexis said in a loud voice. “Some nice person brought kolaches and doughnuts to work this morning. A dozen of them are still left in the kitchen.”

“I can’t eat that shit. Remember I’m watching what I eat these days.”

“Oh, chile, you so wrong for that.” Shyla laughed at Nicole’s catty remark.

“Well, why don’t you get on about your business and do some work, since you’re making all this money these days.”

Nicole plopped her new leather purse on top of Alexis’s desk.

Hayley poked her little head from the side of the desk. Part of her head was hidden but Nicole still could look directly into the little girl’s eyes.

  “Oh, my God.”

  “What?”

  “She’s what I heard.”

Hayley completely emerged from her hiding place. Aware that she had an audience, she rocked back and forth in her tan suede boots. She wore a dark brown knit dress and some textured tights. A little purse was hanging off her arm.

“What’s she doing here?” Nicole asked. Nicole lifted up the little girl and held her. “I can’t believe this. She’s grown since the last time I saw her.” Nicole wanted to be nice to Hayley. This was her lover’s child, sort of her stepchild. Plus, she really did love children.

Alexis felt protective of Hayley. She wanted to tell everyone that this was her kid, but the workplace environment had treated her so unfairly.

At that moment, when Alexis saw her big, looming desk, she saw her sister. The desk was a custody agreement, a keeper of secrets, the hider of a Freakum Bag, and a clever way to conceal her truths. She was sick of burying truth inside of lies.

Hayley’s eyes lit up. She gurgled and seemed so happy, so accepting, no matter what was going on around her.

“This beautiful child is my daughter, Hayley. I’m in the process of obtaining full custody of my baby. And the day care center has admitted her, but they won’t have an opening until tomorrow. I chose to bring her here where I could watch her. And I—”

Why am I explaining my situation to them?

“Hayley will be here as long as I want her to be. You got a problem with that?”

“I know all about it. You’re just doing what you have to do.”

Nicole ruffled the little girl’s hair and set her in Alexis’s arms.

Shyla stared at Hayley and smiled. “She really is a cutie pie. Just like her mommy.”

The two women walked away, leaving Alexis alone with her daughter.

Alexis allowed Hayley to sit next to her on a guest chair that she positioned on the side of her desk. She did her work for the remainder of the morning and was surprised that none of her coworkers gave her odd looks. But when lunchtime arrived, she quickly scooped the girl up and whisked her out the door. She drove Hayley to her cousin Fendi’s apartment. Mona Hooker, who normally watched her, was tied up all day at several doctor’s appointments and couldn’t keep her. So Alexis had to make other plans.

“I have a meeting that I need to attend . . . Thank you so much,” Alexis told her cousin and handed her some cash.

“I got a hair appointment later—”

“Don’t worry. I will pick her up. Just let me know when. Text me.”

  “All right, cuzzo.”

Alexis drove back to work feeling more at ease. She was someone’s mother. She knew it was time to start acting like it. She wanted to phone Rashad but resisted the urge. She needed to learn how to face tough situations on her own.

Approximately an hour before she was scheduled to get off work, she heard a commotion down the hall near the entrance
of the building. She tried to concentrate on her typing, but couldn’t.

The sound of multiple voices disturbed her.

“Whose little girl is this? She’s so cute! Look at those little Timbs.”

“Aww, she’s got some pretty ole eyes. This baby is too precious.”

“I got next when you’re done holding her. I love babies.”

Alexis was mildly curious. She loved babies, too. She was about to rise up from her seat when she saw a silhouette of someone creeping down the hall. Two shapely figures. She heard the soft pitter-patter of tiny feet. Then the sound abruptly stopped.

  “Mama.”

Hayley’s unmistakable voice. Alexis saw Fendi rushing behind Kiara. Kiara whisked the little girl in her arms. She held her and talked sweetly to her.

Alexis froze on sight, unable to talk or think.

Kiara set the child down. Hayley burst into a wild sprint and zigzagged through the corridor. Kiara laughed and began to chase her.

Hayley stopped in front of Kiara’s office, then dashed inside.

Alexis reclined in her seat and shut her eyes tight.

Soon she heard, “Dada. Hi, Dada.” Alexis presumed her daughter saw the family photo with Rashad in her boss’s office.

After that, the sound of cruel silence.

Until Fendi interrupted. “Cuzzo, you all right?”

  “Why are you here?”

“I had to pee and now I’m ’bout to go. I told you I had to get my hair did. I’m already late to my ’point-ment. . . holla.”

“I. Was supposed. To pick. Her up,” Alexis spoke to the shadow of her flaky cousin, who quickly left the building and disappeared out of sight.

  “I paid you. I . . . ugh.”

Not long afterward, Kiara slowly traipsed down the hallway. This time she was holding Hayley in her arms. The little girl patted Kiara’s cheeks with her fingers as she softly sang. Kiara silently marched until her long trail ended at Alexis.

“So this is my husband’s daughter.”

This time the boss didn’t want to meet with Alexis in her office. This time she demanded the woman follow her down the hall, through the exit doors, down the steps, and away from the four walls of their building and onto the college campus.
