Backwater Cove

It took me the whole day and most of the next to finally unwind. We woke to a brilliant morning, though I knew it was another step towards summer when the nighttime temperatures wouldn’t drop below eighty for several months. I sat there drinking my coffee, thinking about what we should do and the one thing from the case that hadn’t faded.
“I want to dive,” I said.
“Nice. That little snorkeling excursion did it for you,” she said.
I had told her about the swim over to the house. “Yeah, maybe something Allie would like, too.”
“I think that’s awesome. How about I call TJ down in Key Largo and see if he’ll take us out on one of those discover diving trips. You don’t have to be certified for those.”
I smiled. “Won’t I drag you down?”
“Nah, I just like blowing bubbles sometimes. Let’s do it.”
Several hours later, we were at the docks of TJ and Alicia’s dive shop in Key Largo. I had met the couple before, in my first case here helping out Mac Travis. We embraced like old friends and TJ took me aside to run me through the pre-dive briefing. Alicia and Justine disappeared upstairs.
“You two seem good together,” TJ said.
“Yeah,” I said, fiddling with the regulator. I’d been thinking about how things had moved forward with our relationship and was almost ready for the next step. But, then with Allie coming into our lives, I wasn’t sure I should rush. “You think you could teach my daughter to dive?”
“It’s what I do, dude. Happy to.”
I had a vision of the three of us as sort of a family—diving together. “That’d be great,” I said, and smiled at Justine who was coming down the stairs.
“What are you so happy about?” she asked.
“Just stuff. Let’s do this,” I said, hoping it wasn’t the last time I spoke those words to her.
