by Joan Hohl

“Helen?” Marsh’s sharp tone barely penetrated the mistiness, but she felt his strength when he scooped her up into his arms. “What’s the matter? Are you coming down with something?” The questions were rapped anxiously at her as he strode through the living room into the bedroom.

“No, Marsh, I’m not sick.” Off her feet she felt the fuzziness pass and she smiled weakly at him. “I’m pregnant.”

Marsh froze. Even his face looked frozen. “How?” At her arched glance he sighed, “I mean, I thought you were taking precautions.”

  “I stopped.”

“Why, Helen? I told you it didn’t matter.”

“It suddenly mattered very much to me.” She hid her face against his chest as he set her on her feet. “I wanted to have our baby, Marsh.”

The sound of his sharply indrawn breath came clearly to her as he turned her around in his arms, then spread his hands wide over her still flat belly. “Is it safe for you, love?”

“Yes, Marsh. I’m seeing an excellent obstetrician.”

“Are you sure?” he murmured against her hair. “Are you very, very sure?”

“Very, very sure.” Helen’s hands covered his, the narrow gold band on her left ring finger brushing against its counterpart on his. “It will be all right, I promise you. We are going to have a beautiful baby, Marsh.”
