Touch was a new thing to Emma now. The slightest caress from Jace made her feel like everything was going to be okay. It didn’t matter that the Rogue clan was probably in disarray, trying to figure out what to do.
Sara’s husband Dean, Alpha of the Gold Wing Raven clan, had people who’d infiltrated the rogues. Without a word from their leader, they were trying to figure out what to do next. And that was dangerous. Either they would fall apart, or one of them would try to do something grand and stupid to make their presence known. Dean said that a few of the rogues were already trying to figure out how to get close to the Ghost clan to bring them down.
Emma wouldn’t focus on that. There was time enough to be worried about those douche nozzles later. Right now, Emma wanted to focus on everything that was right. Everything that was good.
“Em, I know you mentioned getting married at the courthouse, but I don’t want that. For either of us. You had a Vegas wedding you barely remember—”
“Elvis was there.”
“— and I’ve never gotten married. I want to do it right. You in a beautiful gown, Lily with an equally beautiful dress as she drops flower petals as you walk down the aisle, and our families there to witness our joining. I want you to take my last name, and I want Lily to have it too. If that’s okay with you.” Jace reached into his pocket and pulled out a wooden box that looked old and well cared for. “I got this in ancient Kemet back when it was thriving. And I’ve held on to it. I knew that one day I would find my mate, and when I saw this ring I knew it would be for that woman.”
Ancient Kemet? They needed to talk about everything he knew. “Jace, I— I don’t know what to… I don’t even know how many years ago that is. Three thousand years ago? You’ve been holding on to this for over three thousand years?”
“Forty-six hundred,” he said chuckling. “Emma, I’ve been waiting for you since the beginning of time. Eons have passed, and the only thing that kept me sane was the idea that you would come.” He picked up her left hand. He kissed each of her fingers and then bit the thin skin between her thumb and forefinger.
Her breath caught in her chest as she watched him. This man loved her. Had loved her since before she was born. But even then, they’d been destined to be together. Part of him lived inside of her, guiding them, leading them until they were together. And now, here they were.
He opened the box and Emma cried out in awe. It was beautiful. A ring made of solid gold sat in dark purple velvet. Tiny hieroglyphs ran the entire length of the band.
“What does it say?” she whispered, holding up her left hand before he even had the chance to ask.
He slid the ring on her finger and then lifted her hand to kiss it again. “It translates to Queen of my Heart. I was worried it wouldn’t fit, but look at that. It fits perfectly. You are the queen of my heart, Emma.” He leaned forward and cupped her face in his large, warm hands. “I can’t promise that things will be smooth. Hell, you see how this shit has been the past few weeks, and we’re just getting started. But I promise to always be there for you and Lily. I’ll lay down my life for the both of you and will do everything in my power to make you happy. You already said you would marry me, so no taksie-backsies.” He laughed and wiped away a tear that fell down Emma’s face. “I’m yours and you’re mine. I love you.”
Faster than she meant to, Emma jumped and threw her arms around Jace’s neck. If it weren’t for Jace’s strength, they both would’ve tumbled to the ground.
“I love you too, Jace. So much more than you know. And I’m good with a big wedding. I already bear your mark and you have mine. I’m yours and you’re mine.”
She pressed her lips against his, and when she pulled away from the kiss she couldn’t help but drop quick, plucking kisses all around his face.
He ran his hands up and down her back, filling her with every ounce of love he could give to her. The years they’d spent apart readied them for their time together now. It made them ready to fight when the battle was brought to their front door. Regardless of what the rogues thought, no matter how hard they tried to prevent or reverse their bonds, the Ghost clan would always prevail. It wasn’t over yet, but she knew that her clan would always be the victors. She even had hope that Willow would be able to free Ronin and help him heal. She may not be happy that he was her mate, but Emma knew that Willow wouldn’t give up.
Jace had given her so much. A large family, friends who loved and protected her and Lily without question, and a beast that would make her ready for any battle that came their way. Her heart was bound to Jace and the Ghosts so wholly, and nothing could ever change that.
She loved Jace, adored him. Needed him, and he needed her just as much.
“You make me feel like I have my wings back, Emma,” he whispered into her ear, warm breath permeating her skin and reaching straight for her heart and soul. “I’m soaring because of you. I’m flying, and nothing can ever take that away. Thank you.”
Her fallen angel had waited for her, and she was so grateful to be the one to give him back the feel of flying
And his grace.
