Steve’s Sidekick, Book 1: Zombie Bait Page 4

  Chapter 5

“I think he’s waking up.” I heard a disoriented voice say.

“Good. The book kept changing after that happened. I think that someone other than us knows that this book is the secret to telling us everything as long he’s here.”

“So you’re just going to use him?”

“Not use him. I’m going to ask him to help us. He’ll understand if we tell him that this is the only way for us to figure out if his Steve is really the Steve from two centuries ago. Without him, this book is useless.”

  “Danny? Penny?” I mumbled.

“How are you feeling?” Penny asked.

  “Eh. Not good or bad.”

“You passed out after launching into the air. That armor saved you. Without it, you would’ve lost more than half of your hearts.”

  “How many did I lose?”

“You lost four. Don’t worry though. The doctors here will help you recover in no time.”

  “Is the book still changing?”

Danny opened the book and shook his head.

“Nope. It only works if you’re in a stable state. That’s why Penny called me earlier. She was telling that the book kept changing. I guess this just proves that your future isn’t always predetermined.”

“But you still need me to catch the bomber?”

  “Exactly.”

“I’ll do it if you want me to. I still want to know who’s trying to get rid of me.”

“That’s not exactly easy. There are over thousands of people living here. If the book keep changing like this, we’ll never know an exact location of where the bomber will plant the next TNT.”

“Well, it’s not like it’s easy to get flint and steel here and that’s the only way to set off a TNT, right?” Danny asked

“Of course not. Anyone that has a pressure plate, Redstone, or even a lever can set off a TNT however they want. Unfortunately, everyone here has access to any of that here.” Penny shook her head and sighed.

“For now, all we have is the book and I vote that we try to look at other people’s fates through this book.” Danny looked at each of us.

“What was the last accurate thing you read in the book?” I asked and Danny opened the book.

“It said ‘the sidekick was continuously getting attacked by guards surrounding him and he didn’t know what to do. Right before anything got too serious, Danny came and stopped the guards from hurting the sidekick while Penny stayed behind to examine the book and its content.”

“After that, your future kept changing. At first, it was talking about the guards coming back to harass you and then it said that you were going to go back to the library with Danny. I thought that it was weird so I called Danny to make sure that everything was okay.”

“First things first,” I got off the bed and pulled out all the IVs and any magnetic pads attached to me. “We have to find out who’s trying to get me.”

“We can check the library first and see if any of the other books can help us.”

“Sounds like a plan.” Danny chuckled and patted me on the back. Strangely, I felt like someone was watching me. Not just one person but numerous people. I looked around and didn’t see anyone or anything suspicious enough for me to question.

  “You okay?” Penny asked.

  “I’m fine. I think I’m just delusional.”

“Want to get checked by the doctor before we go?” Danny asked.

“No, I’ll be fine. Let’s get going.”
