This Is The Story Of How I Fell In Love With A Dragon

I’ve always been a normal girl. The only things I’ve wanted from life are happiness and prosperity, and a little bit of love mixed in.

The simple pleasures have always been enough for me.

My life changed the night I went to help my friend. Misty was always getting into trouble, and I was always the one to save her.

Dependable Danni was what she called me, but she was the closest I had to a family and I had to help her.

Turns out I needed some help too, from a man who would go on to change my life. Some people won’t believe this story. Some will think it too strange. I’m not a princess, nor a knight, but I’ve seen a dragon live in the flesh. They’re beautiful, wonderful creatures, but there’s also a man behind the monster.

Secrets Are About To Be Revealed

From a young age I, Amber McPherson, have been intrigued by mystery and adventure. Coming from a long line of explorers and inventors, I’ve had a lot to live up to if I’m to continue the family legacy, but I’m also burdened by guilt.

A few years ago, my parents lost their lives when going to explore and map the mysterious Dragon Island. Now, I’ve found funding to go there myself and discover the secrets that my parents never could, but I’m not alone.

Forced to join me are two archaeology enthusiasts who forced themselves onto the expedition at my behest. These twin brothers are brash, competitive, and threaten to ruin the experience. But they also have a secret, one that will become more apparent as the mysteries of Dragon Island are revealed.

  What If Dragons Were Real?

And they roamed the Earth in the form of two breathtakingly hot guys. You’d think I was crazy but I’ll tell you what, I’ve slept with them and they are 100% real – every last inch of them.

  There’s only one problem.

They’re dangerous – the kind of men who are known to claim women and yearn for them to birth their children. Now, logically, knowing this, I should run far, far away.

But try running away from a couple of guys who just rocked your world into next week. It’s not that easy especially when you find yourself carrying their baby.

So, I’m left with a choice: to live among the dragons and take my chances or to rely on my cheating ex-boyfriend and his desire for revenge.

But is it really a choice at all? Tell me, what would you do if you knew dragons were real?

I thought he was just an asshole – a sexy asshole – but an asshole all the same.

  Turns out he’s a dragon.

And there are hundreds of them living in the woods, hidden away from human society.

They’re split into two clans: the Aetos and the Ragnis.

And I’m the key to total warfare between them.

  Why?

Because someone wants me, and he can’t have me.

Did I happen to mention that this is the same asshole I vowed to hate for the rest of my life?

  Yeah, it’s complicated. Real complicated.

To make matters worse, there was another guy thrown into the mix.

He’s cute and funny – everything a girl could ever want.

But to have him, I have to have them both.

  No way.

I’m not falling for that asshole.

Let the consequences be as they may.

Lyle Stokes will never be anything less than my enemy.

  You can bank on it.

  Fire In Their Hearts

  Chapter 1: Ari

  Thump. Thump. Thump.

Music thrummed through my ears. My heartbeat kept with the tempo. Beads of sweat gathered along my brow. I swept them away with a swipe of my arm as I continued through the park.

Along the way, I passed a couple of old-time joggers. They had upped their game by incl
uding 2-pound weights to their power walks. Chirpy as always, they waved in greeting. I returned the wave with one of my own.

Distracted as I was, I didn’t have enough time to react to the person who had suddenly popped up in front of me. I tried to veer to the left, but I wasn’t quick enough. I barreled straight into his chest.

The force of it was enough to send me crashing into the ground. Luckily, I landed on my ass. Thanks to my fair share of squats, it was a decent-enough cushion.

A second later, I felt the air being knocked out of my lungs.

“Oof!” I gasped as I was pinned to the ground by someone’s weight.

As we tried to get up, all we managed was a tangling of limbs.

“Oh dear, should we do something Geraldine?” One of the old women looked on with a look of concern painted on her face.

“Oh no,” answered Geraldine, “it looks like they’re having their fair share of fun.” She jabbed her friend with her elbow. “Do you remember when we were young?” A giggle erupted from her lips. “Oh! The trouble we caused!”

Laughing, the two women walked away to continue their afternoon exercise.

Meanwhile, I was still trying to free myself from this rather embarrassing situation. “I’m starting to think you like it on top of me,” I huffed. As I spoke, I got my first real look at the stranger.

  Whoa.

He had this charming smile – you know, the kind of smile you might find on the cover of a magazine. “I must admit, it’s a rather nice view,” he said with a wink.

I expected him to be staring at my chest or something but he was looking straight into my eyes. He had such intensity to his gaze that it made me feel like I was the only girl in the entire world. It made me shiver.

“Mommy? What are they doing?” A little kid pointed in our direction.

“Looks like that kid is going to be hearing about the birds and the bees,” the stranger chuckled.

“Are you ever going to get off me?”

“I’m thinking about it but it’s a shame when you’re so damn comfy.”

Was this guy serious right now? We were in a public park for crying out loud. But, at the same time, I could have been making a bigger fuss about the whole thing and I wasn’t. Truth be told, I was rather enjoying myself. It’s not every day that a drop-dead gorgeous man falls right into your lap.

“Alright, foot patrol’s giving us a funny look. We better get up before we get charged for public indecency.” Finally, he rose to his feet and offered a hand.

I took it and with the utmost ease, he lifted me off the ground. Since he was wearing nothing but a tank top, I could see his ripped muscles underneath the skin of his arm.

  Wow.

This guy definitely worked out. There was no doubt about it.

And it didn’t stop at his arm. The thin fabric of his shirt did little to hide the lean of his torso.

“Hope I didn’t hurt you,” he said, voice husky, as soon as the foot cop passed us by. “You just kind of barreled right into me. I’ve heard of love at first sight, but I’d say you’re taking it a bit too literally, don’t you think?”

I blushed at his words. “What?”

He grinned. “I’m just teasing. It’s something I do.” Without warning, he grabbed my hand and started running. I had no choice but to follow his lead or risk getting dragged along.

It only took a few seconds for us to fall into a perfect sync. “What do you think you’re doing?” I said in protest but I continued to follow him along the path.

“I’ve always wanted to do that!” He shouted as he picked up the pace. We were running at a full-blown spirit. My calf muscles ached with exertion but still, I kept going. Our palms had become so sweaty that we were forced to let go of one another. Free to pump my arms, I urged myself to run a little faster, pulling ahead of the mysterious stranger.

Honestly, this whole thing was absolutely insane. What was I even doing? Then again, what was the harm in having a bit of fun every once in a while?

“Oh, it’s a race, is it?” He growled. “You’re on!” He charged ahead and I swear he didn’t even break a sweat doing it.

I cursed under my breath and struggled to keep up. And I thought I was good at running. This guy had to be a professional or something.

He cruised to a large oak tree and stopped there like it had been designated as our finish line. By the time I caught up, there was this dirty grin on his face. “Not bad, not bad.”

“Who the hell are you?” I panted for breath.

“Name’s Vern,” he introduced himself with one of his charming smiles.

My legs were already jelly but he was definitely making it worse.

“I’m… Ari.” I doubled over and gasped for air. “Jeez… I guess I’m out of shape.”

“Nah, I’m just incredibly good,” he responded with a wink. “I’m amazed you were able to keep up as much as you did.”

“I can see that having an ego is one of your charming characteristics,” I huffed sarcastically. “You know, there’s something called modesty in this world. It’s pretty attractive.”

“Is it now?” He raised an eyebrow. “I’ve never heard of it.”

“I guess you learn something new every day,” I returned.

“Guess so.” Again, there was that charming smile of his. It had my heart jumping through hoops. An overwhelming heat lingered just behind my cheeks. Desperate to quench the fire, I jogged over to a nearby water fountain.

The cool, refreshing stream worked wonders.

“Take your time, take your time,” Vern mused as he stood behind me.

It was then that I felt the weight of his stare. I whipped around and narrowed my eyes with suspicion. “Were you just staring at my ass?”

“Sorry. Guilty as charged,” he answered with a grin. “But can you really blame me? That’s quite the asset.”

“Oh wow.” I groaned. “Are you looking to win the lamest joke of the year?”

“Maybe.” He stepped forward. “Or maybe I’m just giving you a compliment.”

“You know, I really should slap you for being such a pig.”

“Who’s stopping you?” He challenged. He even turned his cheek to make it easier for me. This guy was something else entirely. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say he was an alien. “But here’s what I think,” his voice was a low, seductive whisper, “I think you’re completely smitten by me but you just don’t want to admit it.”

I was so entranced by the smoothness of his voice that I did not notice his fingertips dancing along the length of my arm. It was only when I looked down, did I see that he had me by the elbows.

His grin deepened as he pulled me closer. Our bodies were mere inches apart.

  I held my breath.

“C’mon, you don’t have to play hard to get with me.”

Suddenly, I came crashing back to reality. I pushed away and shook my head. “Are you always this forward?”

  “Only on Tuesdays.”

“But today’s Thursday,” I answered. “Oh! What does it matter? You’re clearly a crazy person.”

“Am I?” He had me pinned up against a tree in a moment’s notice. “Because I don’t hear you screaming. If you really thought I was a crazy person, you’d try to get away from me.”

“I did!” I protested as I jerked against his grip. His fingers tightened to a vice-like hold. “And how do you expect me to get away when you have me trapped?”

“All you have to do is ask and I’ll let go.” He leaned forward ever so slightly so that his warm breath brushed against the side of my neck. I shivered as a euphoric sensation traveled just underneath my skin. It seemed to fester inside my chest, forcing my heart to work in double time.

I looked up and our eyes locked.

What was this guy doing to me? It was like he had cast some sort of magical spell that was making me act weird.

“Admit it, you like it here.” He
was about to continue but I interrupted him with a knee to the groin.

He fell away, gasping. “Now, was that really necessary?”

“Maybe next time you’ll think twice about acting like a creep,” I said.

Thinking our time together was over, I went over to a bench and tied my shoe. A second later, there he was. This guy just couldn’t take a hint, could he? Then again, I wasn’t trying very hard to get him to leave me alone. Maybe he was right. Maybe I liked him for whatever crazy reason. And now I’m just being ridiculous. There’s no way I like this guy. We only just met.

“For fear of having you knee me a second time, let’s talk about something a bit less scandalous.”

“Who says I want to talk to you at all?”

“The cat has claws.” He placed a hand on his chest and feigned injury.

  I laughed. “And you’re overdramatic.”

“Admit it, you like that about me.”

“What’s up with this obsession over whether I like you or not? You know, most guys take a girl out on a date and get to know her –”

“Alright, how about The Shoppe?” He pointed his thumb in its direction. “If you ask me, it has the best coffee in town.”

  “Not a chance.”

“Ouch! Way to crush my dreams.”
