Supernatural Enemies (A Different Kind Of Hell Book 3) Page 3

by Charlotte Summers

I hear footsteps following me and I turn to meet my attackers however my eyes widen as I see Nat and her team grinning at me.

“Let’s get out of here” She nods to the car and they run to it, I stand frozen as the hunter's fumble with their guns.

I cannot let them follow us back to Nat’s, with my mind made up I turn away from the pack and dart towards the edge of town.

I hear the hunters following and I dart down the alley where Jake first found me.

“Trapped now, what an idiot” One of them laughs as they see me backed against the wall.

I sneer before letting the wolf come forth, I embrace the feel of me shifting for the first time since I found out what I am.

Once in wolf form, I jump at the leader, he screams and drops his gun. It lands on the trigger and a bullet flies from it, I jump away from the bullet which narrowly misses my head.

A growl sounds and I turn my head to see Reece standing with three wolves, two with black fur and one with white fur.

I huff at him and turn back to the hunters who back away, into the alley. I growl and silently laugh as my plan works.

A blur rushes past me and I snarl before I scent Reece, I leap at one hunter who frantically tries to reload his gun. I quickly bite down on his shoulder and pull away, blood pours from his wound and I see Reece dispatch the other hunters.

“Let’s go, I’ll call Percy to clean this mess up,” He says and I follow him to where the other wolves wait.

Jake bumps my shoulder and I huff at him, we run towards the woods and I roll my eyes when I see the car parked ready for us.

“Clothes are in the back” Reece calls and I wait for the others to shift back.

“I think they are after you” Nat looks at me.

I nod, unable to speak in my wolf form. She hands me some clothes and I close my eyes, I think about my human form and how I can open doors.

I feel the rush that shifts me back into my human form and I grin before quickly pulling on the clothes.

I jump in the back and we head back to Nat’s house. I close my eyes and wait for the car to roll to a stop before climbing out.

“Go get some rest” Jake pats my shoulder before pointing to a bedroom.

“Thank you” I mutter before stumbling to the door and shoving myself through it.

I collapse on the bed and feel my mind being pulled towards the dream world.

  Chapter Seven

“Eddie wake up” I feel someone shake me and I frown, who is Eddie? I open my eyes to see Nat grinning at me.

“Do you like it?” She asks.

“Like what?” I reply, my mind only just catching up with being awake.

“Your name, I picked it” She laughs and I frown.

  “Eddie?” I chuckle.

“I know it’s a strange name but it’s just until you remember your real name” She sighs.

“Its fine” I smile, not wanting to ruin her good mood.

I follow her out into the living room where Jake and Ivan are playing a video game.

“Do you play?” Jake asks as his character gets killed by Ivan’s.

“I’ve never tried” I shrug and frown as Jake hands me the controller.

“Have a go” He chuckles and I nod, Ivan starts a new game and I laugh as I get killed straight away.

I shake my head and try again, however, I only last two seconds. I gave the controller back to Jake who doubles over with laughter.

“I’ll train you sometime,” Jake says between giggles.

I nod and Reece motions me over to him, I get up from my perch on the arm of the sofa.

“Let’s get you controlling the vampire side, Nat thinks it will be harder to master than the wolf side of you” Reece shrugs and starts for the door.

“We will be leaving here later, the hunters know we are here so be careful” Nat calls and we nod before Reece opens the door.

“I’m not even sure I can make the vamp side come out” I frown as I walk next to Reece.

“Trust me, it will come out with what I’m planning” Reece grins and my eyes widen in fear.

I gasp as Reece disappears, my mind races and I spin around to look for him.

“Come on” I hear Reece's laugh but I frown, it's coming from all over the place.

“How is that fair!” I laugh, trying to pinpoint where the vampire is.

A hiss sounds and I tense, I growl slightly and I hear Reece chuckle.

“That’s not the one I’m wanting!” I hear him yell.

I grunt as the vampire crashes into me, I feel the wolf trying to make us shift but I shove the wolf down and call for the other side of me.

The one that made me want the blood, the one that lies dormant and the one which could end my life.

My snarl turns to a hiss as my fangs poke through my lips, Reece slows down and I jump at him.

“You did it!” Reece laughs before his eyes widen, I can’t control it.

He sidesteps my attack and I huff out a breath before forcing myself to stand still. I close my eyes and count to ten, the vampire side of me demands we attack Reece before he attacks us, however, I ignore it and try to push the instincts down like I did with the wolf side.

“You good?” Reece asks after a while, I open my eyes and he grins.

“Part one is complete, let’s not test you again for a while” He chuckles and I nod.

I hear the door open and Nat walks out with two plates. She hands one to me and I nod at her and she kisses Reece before handing him the other plate.

I plop down to the ground and tuck into the meal. Reece sits down next to me and Nat wanders back into the house.

“We are going to do some scouting later, fancy joining us?” Reece says as he leans back onto his elbows.

“Sure” I shrug in reply, not really knowing what scouting is.

We sit in silence for what feels like hours, however, must only have been minutes.

I turn my head as I hear the door open and close again, the rest of the pack come out to join us.

“So you wanted to know about Percy?”Nat asks.

“I can’t remember why” I shrug, it was the wolf who wanted me to get in touch with him I think to myself.

“You might once we meet him, he is having some trouble back home and wants us to go help him” Nat frowns.

“I might and let’s go” I raise my eyebrow.

“We cannot just leave here, the hunters will follow” Jake sighs, rubbing a hand through his hair.

“Take a detour and stop off somewhere, if they follow us we take them out?” I suggest.

“That could work” Nat nods and starts to pace, the others become like statues as they wait for her to make a plan.

She looks at me and nods before taking off into the house. I glance at Ivan and I see him scowling.

“What’s up?” I ask and his scowl deepens.

“He hates travelling” Jake chuckles and Ivan growls at him.

“Its no wonder with your sister driving” I reply which earns me a smile from Ivan.

“Ivan come help!” I laugh as Nat's voice fills my ears.

Ivan rolls his eyes before begrudgingly walking towards the house. I shake my head and follow, leaving Reece and Jake outside.

As soon as I enter the living room I’m tied down with a massive bag, I laugh and walk back out again to put it in the car.

“Got you doing the lifting has she?” Reece chuckles and uses his speed to zoom past me.

I plant the bag in the boot and nearly growl when Reece blurs to a stop behind me.

“Jeez man, you trying to kill me?” I ask, putting my hand on my heart to slow the fast beat.

“No, you just need to get used to it” He replies and I roll my eyes at him.

Nat motions for us all to get in and I jump in the back, the wolf within me settles when the rest jump in the car. I frown slightly before asking the wolf why he is so calm.

“You don’t know what it’s like not having a pac
k. We are finally complete and I will help you when you need” The wolf responds and I grin, for the first time since this freak show began I can finally be at peace; if only for a little while.

Nat turns on the engine and I look out of the window as she pulls onto the dirt track and away from the town.

  Chapter Eight

I groan as Ivan and Nat argue about the music for the tenth time, the wolf within me huffs at their antics but the vampire side burns to be released so I can silence their annoying voices.

I see Reece watching me with a frown, maybe he can sense what the vampire side wants.

“You having any trouble?” He asks.

“Just a little, I’ll be fine. I guess werewolves and vampires are enemies for a reason” I chuckle and Reece nods.

“I know where we can stop, our old house!” Nat looks in the mirror towards Reece who nods.

“A lot of hunters still think the pack live there so it’s perfect” Jake grins and I shiver slightly if the hunters have followed it will be me to blame. Jake shakes his head at me as if he knows my train of thought and I sigh.

I zone out, my mind wanders through what memories I do have left, I try to figure out what my real name is, however, it just won’t come to me.

“We are here” Reece shakes me and I frown, I don’t remember falling asleep; I don't remember much of anything so it shouldn't surprise me.

I climb out of the car and scan the area, two mansion-like houses stand near each other. The woods surround them and I relax with the thought of a run.

“We used to live here but we had to move for our own protection” Nat sighs, I see Reece hug her before they walk arm in arm to the smaller mansion.

I wait until Jake and Ivan are following before I set off, this place makes me feel like I’m being watched.

My wolf agrees with me and I lift my nose to the wind, I growl when the smell of silver reaches my nose.

“Don’t go in there!” I shout at the top of my lungs as I start to race towards the others.

Nat whips around and her eyes widen, I glance behind me to see blurs rapidly coming at me.

I look Reece dead in the eyes and he nods, my control will have to wait. I push the wolf instincts down and struggle to bring the vampire side of me out. The vampire within doesn’t want to fight its own kind.

I feel my fangs slide free as my vampire side lets me be in full reign. The blurs slow down enough for me to see how many there are and to be able to fight them, I feel Reece at my side and I know he used his speed to get here.

“Stay away from the house” Reece roars to the werewolves as we prepare to attack.

I hiss and dive at the first vampire. My eyes scan the others as I’m in mid-air, four vampires. I calculate in my head as I crash into the first one, if I dispatch this one quickly I can grab the other before he reaches the werewolves.

I hiss as fangs dig deeply into my body, taking a leaf out of his book I sink mine into his. The blood bursts into my mouth and I have the urge to spit it out.

Instead, I drain him of everything he has, I see Reece doing the same. His first vampire lay on the ground unmoving.

I let the vampire I’m holding fall to the floor and use my speed to grab the last remaining vampire who is just about to grab Nat.

My fangs sink into his throat and I pull back, his throat rips open and blood pours from the wound. The vampire staggers before collapsing to the floor.

“Look out!” I hear Nat shout, I spin around to see a hunter pointing his gun at me.

“Nighty night little hybrid” He grins before shooting at me.

I dodge the bullet but another hunter shoots a bullet which I cannot dodge. I grunt as fire runs along my veins, the more I move the worse the pain gets.

“Eddie!” I hear Jake shout as my vision grows blurry. The wolf shoves the vampire form the driver seat in my mind and I feel the power flow through me.

Just as I’m about to leap at the hunter I hear a bullet being fired from behind me, fear for my new pack makes me turn around to see Nat fall to the ground.

I grunt as something is shoved into my back and whatever strength the wolf gave me disappears.

I collapse to the ground, unable to move or speak.

I’m bundled into a cage before being thrown into the back of a van, Nat and Reece are placed next to me and I watch for Nat’s chest rising.

I see Reece struggling to move, his eyes glow red and I know for a fact that when he is able to move, there will be hell to pay.

I close my eyes and focus on moving my fingers and toes, whatever was in the bullet starts to fade and I grin as my arms start to work.

“Reece is she okay?” I ask.

“Yeah, just knocked up” He struggles to growl.

  “Thank god” I mutter.

Reece watches Nat and I see the raw fear in his eyes. I frown, I know they are a couple but I didn’t think they were that close.

“She’s my mate, she dies I die” Reece mutters as if hearing my thoughts.

“She won’t die, I’ll make sure of it” I try to smile but it doesn’t reach my eyes.

I place my hands on the bars of the cage to test how strong they are. Reece rolls his eyes at me and I raise my eyebrow.

“They are made with silver and whatever they shot us with” Reece huffs and I see him narrow his eyes in thought.

“There must be a weak spot somewhere” I growl, the wolf within panicking at being locked in the cage.

I shiver and groan as I feel the wolf shoving for the shift. Reece’s head snaps up and I cry out as my bones start to crack and reform.

“You have to fight it, if you shift now you could get us all killed” Reece hisses, his fangs springing free.

“I can’t” I reply which comes out as a snarl.

Fur runs along my skin and I collapse to the floor once the shift is complete.

“Why is your fur a different colour?” I hear Reece ask and I turn my head to look at what used to be silvery-grey fur. I huff when I see white fur instead, the tips of my fur are black with red mixed in.

I roll my eyes, my fur colour is not that much different, maybe a little bit redder.

“It must be the vampire side of you” Reece sighs.

The van drives over a bump in the road and I growl while scrambling to keep my balance.

“I hope Jake and Ivan are okay” Reece sighs, rubbing his neck.

I let out a little bark and wag my tail, hoping he knows what I’m trying to say. He chuckles and I settle on my stomach, laying my head on my paws.

“Try shift back before we stop” Reece mutters and I nod.

I close my eyes and try to remember my human form however the wolf will not give me control back. I whine and Reece nods.

  Chapter Nine

The van slows to a stop and I whine, Reece pats my shoulder and I huff at him. I hear Nat groan and we both look at her, she puts a hand to her head and curls up but doesn’t open her eyes.

The doors open and I rush at the bars, I snarl and snap but the men just laugh at me which gets the wolf even angrier.

“Chill out, that’s not going to help” Reece whispers so low that my wolf hearing only just catches it.

One of the men holds up a gun, he points it at me and I tense. He grins before pulling the trigger, I try to jump away however the cage is too small and the bullet hits my shoulder. I shiver as silver fills my veins, the vampire side tries to shove the wolf side down to protect us however the wolf will not give up my mind and we collapse to the cage floor.

I feel the cage being moved from the van but I’m powerless to do anything about it, panic swells in my chest and I feel a tear trail down my nose.

I growl slightly, wolves don’t cry I remind myself.

“Get the wolf onto the table, the vampire and the werewolves can watch” I hear an evil voice, I frown as much as I can in wolf form. I know that voice. I wonder to myself, is it Gath?

I feel hands roughly grab my fur and pull me fr
om the cage. They throw me onto a metal table and my head lolls back to see Reece pacing his cage and hissing at anyone who goes near his or Nat’s cage.

I growl as someone ties me down, I cannot see who it is or what they are about to do and it sets the wolf even more on edge.

The silver lets up and I find myself able to move, I look towards three other cages. Jake and Ivan stare at me with fear written all over their faces however the cage next to them hold a female about my age.

Her eyes meet mine and I shiver, a need to protect her from the horrors of the world floods me and I hear Reece chuckle.

I whine at him and he shrugs at my silent question, how the hell are we going to get out of this one?

I feel someone poke me with a needle and I snarl. The person chuckles before shoving the needle roughly into my body, I clench my teeth to stop from crying out in pain.

“We can finally get to work on him, good job on catching him” I hear another person say as a door opens.

“Should we knock him out?” The person closest to me says.

“No, he should feel everything. He has been a pain in the neck to find” The other person growls and I gulp, fear races through me and I shiver.

I struggle against the ties however they will not break, I hear Nat move and I focus on her. Reece watches me with an unreadable expression, Nat gasps when her eyes meet mine and she rushes to the front of her cage.

Reece grabs her arm before she can touch the bars and I huff a sigh. A buzzing fills my ears and I shake my head to get it to stop, pain explodes behind my eyes and I whine.

“It’s working! Turn it up!” the sound feels strange in my ears.

What’s working? And why turn it up? I think to myself as the sound gets louder, I cry out and a howl rips from me.

“He is going to wake them” One of the people surrounding me snarls.

“Who cares? They listen to me!” Another snaps back.

“Eddie focus on my voice” I hear Nat over the buzzing and the pain.

She starts telling me about her pack and the adventures she and her brother have had when they were little.

I whine as the people inject me with something else, however, I fix my eyes on Nat’s.
