But then Bethany’s surprised smile soothed Shannon’s rioting nerves like the first touch of cold cream would cool a burning scar.
“I do not have a husband.”
The two women looked at each other over the table. Their sights interlocked, the rest of the world around them ceased to exist. The waitress next to their table had to repeat her question three times before either of them reacted.
“What would you like to have, Beth?” she asked.
The magic finally broke. The band also continued with their music. The catchy tune spread in the air like a viral infection of fatal love.
“Oh,” Bethany answered the waitress, “I would have a beer, maybe.” She looked at Shannon as if it depended on the other what she was going to order.
“Yeah, another one for me, too,” Shannon nodded.
The waitress inspected Shannon with a visible amount of malice. An unexpected way to treat a paying customer.
“Just a minute,” the waitress hissed and left.
“God,” Shannon trembled, “what was that about.”
Bethany shrugged her shoulder.
“Old story,” she said.
“I bet there are many old stories in a small town like this…”
Bethany smiled.
“Do not do it, you would just lose your bet,” she answered.
Their beers arrived but it was delivered by another waiter.
“So,” Bethany asked, “what is all this about?”
Shannon blushed.
“You mean us?”
Bethany laughed.
“No,” she said chuckling, “I mean the speeding, your trip from New York to Frisco, your decision to stay.”
Shannon sighed. She looked away inspecting the dancing couple on the floor in front of the podium. They whirled and swirled around in a mad fashion.
“I’m going to sell my company,” she said finally.
“Congrats,” Bethany replied, “what kind of company is that if I might ask.”
“Software engineering, artificial intelligence, that sort of stuff…”
Bethany looked a little flabbergasted.
“You mean?” she asked.
Shannon shrugged her shoulders.
“Robots, I guess.”
The conversation reached a halt. Apparently Bethany did not have too much to say regarding the topic.
Shannon realized that Bethany was part of a different world, something more primal, more natural. Robots were for her at best science fiction and worst modern witchcraft.
“That’s some fancy occupation,” Bethany finally uttered.
Shannon started to laugh.
“Not that fancy if you are in the middle of it,” she replied. “And besides that I’m planning to quit. Sell out and start something new. Something fresh.”
“And what?” Bethany inquired.
“Call me crazy, but I have no idea,” Shannon said, “I guess this little trip was expected to give me the right answers but so far nothing came up.”
“I’m sorry to hear that,” Bethany replied sympathetically.
“Do not be,” Shannon said, “what about you? Do you enjoy being a police officer?”
Bethany smiled.
“It has a couple of advantages. Provides a steady view on life. A certain mindset so to say. If I was not a police officer for example, I would have not found you so easily tonight.”
Shannon did not understand. Bethany read the signs of bafflement correctly and continued her explanation.
“So, my brother, the mechanic, he told me about your car. Then about the motel he recommended. It is run by our cousin.
I figured that you might get hungry and the most likely place you were going to have dinner would be this bar in front of your motel. I kind of hoped to see you again…”
Shannon blushed after that last remark. She could not keep a straight eye contact. That pair of chestnut eyes moved something deep inside her. Something she was afraid of a little bit but also very excited by.
The band finished their show. Bethany and Shannon finished their beers.
“You know,” Shannon said, “it has been a long day. I feel like going back to the motel but I do not want to be left alone just yet.”
Bethany did not answer.
“We could have a beer over there,” Shannon proposed quietly.
“Sounds perfect,” Bethany nodded.
They got up and bought a last round at the bar. With their bottles in their hands they crossed the road and entered Shannon’s room in the motel.
The night was far from being over.
Chapter 3
Shannon’s room gave a dark and quiet impression after Bethany closed the door behind their back. The street in front of the motel remained the only source of noise and light.
The neon signs of the bar painted scarlet blots all over the white wall on the opposite side of the room. The dancing shadows were accompanied by occasional drunk shouts.
“So,” Shannon muttered, “this is it. Not much of a room.”
Bethany took a couple of steps ahead. She passed by the light switch but did not turn it on. Shannon was grateful for Bethany’s discretion. She preferred the semi darkness reigning in her room.
“I like it,” Bethany said and dropped her superb body down on the top of Shannon’s bed. She lay on her back, propping herself up with one of her elbows. In her other hand she held the bottle.
“Cheerio,” she waved the beer towards Shannon.
Shannon was mesmerized by the sight of Bethany lying on the top of her bed in such a provocative pose. Her short jeans revealed most of her tight and appealing thighs. Bethany had a pair of mind-bogglingly strong and long legs.
Shannon could not turn her head away, could not do as much as answering Bethany’s call for a drink. She just stared quite openly and helplessly at that pair of marvelous limbs, picturing herself between them, wondering how that milky skin would taste on the tip of her tongue.
Bethany not only recognized immediately the effect her last little stunt had on Shannon, she also quite enjoyed being in the driving seat. She lifted one of her legs and crossed it over the other. The magic broke and Shannon finally was able to meet Bethany’s sight.
“Why do you not come over here?” Bethany murmured.
Shannon felt her heartthrobs hit a new, faster rhythm.
Her blood started to dash all around in her veins, her senses sharpened but her conscious mind faltered at the same time. Bethany placed her bottle onto the ground next to the bed. She raised an inviting arm towards Shannon.
Finally, Shannon took her first step forward, cutting down on the distance separating her from Bethany. She left her bottle on the smoking table in the middle of the room. When she reached Bethany, they clenched their hands together.
For a crazy moment Shannon almost tilted ahead and let herself lost in a storm of passion. But at the last moment she decided that things were happening too fast. She wanted a little break, a little more seducing, a little more fooling around. She landed on her bum next to Bethany.
A shadow of disappointment rushed over Bethany’s pretty face when she realized that she had lost the first round. It lasted only for a fraction of a second – Shannon did not refuse her offering, she was only playing for time. Their naked thighs stuck closely together, they could both feel the excitement under their skin buzzing like an overcharged electric circuit on the wake of eruption.
“What’s the matter?” Bethany asked Shannon.
“Nothing really,” Shannon answered.
“Do you want me to leave?” Bethany asked. Of course she took a big gambit, the last thing she wanted to hear was that Shannon wanted her to leave.
Shannon shook her head.
“No, stay, please,” she said.
Bethany sat up from her previous position. Their face were separated only by inches. Bethany caressed Shannon’s burning cheek.
“You are so pretty,” she told her.
“I do not believe
you,” Shannon said. “I’m such a giant enormous failure,” Shannon pleaded, “just look at me!”
Shannon raised her sight and realized that it was exactly what Bethany had been doing anyway.
“I’m looking at you,” she said, “and I think you are marvelous and extremely sexy. At least you are driving me out of my right mind.”
Bethany’s caressing palm reached the back of Shannon’s neck. She held it firmly and bent ahead. This time Shannon did not prevent from happening what had been lurking between the two of them since the moment Bethany stopped her Ferrari on the road.
It had been a long, long while for Shannon but Bethany was not only a seasoned but also a very patient lover. She took it slow, breathing fine kisses with her luscious lips all around Shannon’s mouth.
Then, widening the circle, she kissed her nose, the base of her neck, the tip of her ear. Quite unexpectedly, she stuck her tongue into Shannon’s ear and before Shannon could jump away, she bit her earlobe.
“What was that about?” Shannon broke free laughing.
“I thought you were into some nasty stuff…” Bethany answered smiling.
Shannon just then realized that her hands were all over Bethany’s body. One was caressing the sensitive skin less than an inch away from Bethany’s pussy, while the other clenched onto one of her full breasts.
Shannon gulped. No chance to deny how fascinating she found every square inch of Bethany’s healthy, muscular body.
Instead of answering, Shannon bent ahead and kissed Bethany’s neck under her ear. She felt the other girl trembling under her lips, inside her grasp.
She kept on gently pressuring the Bethany’s bosom while her free hand slid inside the others insanely wet pussy.
Bethany moaned. She fell backwards on the bed. Shannon withdrew her hands and bent ahead to tease Bethany with her mouth. She got rid of the other’s jeans and panties. Bethany fondled Shannon’s hair while she helped her to an orgasm in less than a minute.
“Oh my God,” Bethany sighed, “do not stop it, baby. Just like that…”
Shannon crawled over the top of Bethany and slid two of her fingers back into her. She was looking for a very sensitive spot inside.
When she hit it, she started a careful massage. A new wave of merry trembles spread all about Bethany’s grateful body. The pleasure arrived in ripples – they rushed over her reluctant body from a very solid point of origin one wave after the other.
Their mouths melted into a savage kiss at the end.
Shannon rolled over on the other side of the bed.
Bethany stuck against her body.
“Where are you going?” she asked. “We have barely started yet…”
Not much later Shannon realized that Bethany was not kidding when she said that.
Chapter 4
Shannon marveled over the unexpected turn of her luck the next day in a restaurant Bethany recommended to her. It was not run by any of the cousins, it was simply the best establishment in Fallon.
A waiter stepped to Shannon’s table.
“Would you like to make your order now?” he asked. The guy was sharply dressed and naturally polite. Shannon felt like jumping up and embracing him onto her heart. Since yesterday night she felt not only in peace with the world, the joy accumulating in her bosom constantly threatened with uncontrollable eruptions.
Finally, she was able to get rid of the ridiculous idea.
“No thanks,” she said, “I’m waiting for someone, just a minute.”
The waiter politely bowed and left.
The design of the restaurant was fairly new and lacked most of those rural elements. As much as Shannon was able to judge this place could have been located somewhere on a New York City corner.
She felt not only magnificent, she felt at home. Only thing she missed was Bethany smiling at her from the other side of the table.
But instead of Bethany, a stubborn person from her everyday life found her. As high in spirits as Shannon was, she did not even mind answering the call.
“What’s up, Ben?” she said into her phone.
Ben sounded sick. Probably just the hangover.
“Oh, we miss you so much, Shannon,” he pleaded, “and you miss so much fun.”
Shannon had to laugh.
“I might just have enough fun on my own,” she said. Silence followed her words from the other end of the call.
“What are you saying?” Ben asked. “Something is odd. I have not heard your voice being so full of…, what is it called…”
“Life?” Shannon helped Ben out.
“Lust,” Ben answered.
“Well,” Shannon answered with a tinkling voice, “maybe I have lost some of the issues I have been dragging around for the last couple of months.”
“Could you be a little bit more factual?” Ben demanded.
“I do not think so,” Shannon answered. She spotted a police car stopping in the car park in front of the restaurant. She saw Bethany getting out of that car.
Her heart jumped, only seconds separated her from a newly found love. Love? Shannon felt like she should not lose her better mind just like that but she could not help it. Maybe there was something in the air in Nevada, or maybe Bethany had something special about herself. Well, she certainly had something special about herself.
“Are you listening?” she heard Ben’s voice through the phone.
“What?” Shannon asked.
“I just told you the biggest news regarding the deal and you do not even answer…”
Bethany crossed the entrance of the restaurant and took her shades off of her cute, little French nose. She was deadly but somehow still just adorable. Shannon felt the excitement boiling up inside her stomach.
“So?” she heard Ben’s voice again.
“So, what?” Shannon answered.
Bethany reached the table and took a seat on the opposite side. Shannon flashed a smile at her and apologized with a blink of an eye because of the call. Bethany nodded forgivingly and picked up a menu card.
“As I said,” Shannon heard Ben’s voice in the phone, “they want us to stay. They are willing to buy the company but would like to hire us immediately. They would set up a new headquarters in San Francisco for us. Is not it wonderful?”
Shannon froze for a second.
“Is this a condition?”
“Condition?” Ben laughed. “It is a favor if you ask me…”
“Listen, Ben,” Shannon said, “I have to go. But I will ring you back.”
“Sure thing,” Ben answered, “just do not forget about our bright future in San Francisco while chasing after your lust wherever you are.” And just like that Ben cut the call.
Shannon caught a questioning glimpse of Bethany – she might have overheard Ben’s last lines.
“What was that about?” she asked.
“Nothing, really,” Shannon answered. “My assistant is in San Francisco. I’m going there to sell my company. The buyer offered us some jobs in the new organization…”
Bethany stared ahead of herself in silence while Shannon started to run her eyes through the menu. Finally Bethany placed the menu card back on the top of the table.
“Your bright future…” she muttered.
There was something alien, something distant about her tone. Shannon immediately realized that things just went utterly wrong.
“What is it?” she asked. She reached out with her hand after Bethany’s but she pulled them back and was about to get up.
“I know,” she said, “that we did not promise anything to each other. But it hurts if I’m being referred at as someone else’s lust.”
Shannon could not say a word. She had no idea how she should react.
“But Bethany…” she said.
“Do not worry,” Bethany answered. “This lunch was a bad idea. We should treasure what was good about this. But that was only what happened last night. No reason to spoil the memory.”
Shannon felt a bitter lump formi
ng in her throat. Her vision blurred, she was seconds away from crying.
“I will make this easy for you,” Bethany said and started to walk away.
The waiter arrived back to their table with the drinks. When he recognized the drama unfolding between the two costumers, he decided to flee.
