"The offer was made and rejected. It is now rescinded," Gabriel said without emotion, sounding like a Heaven's lawyer. Her ivory wings stretched out and stole Viola's breath. They were immense, far larger than that of her lesser angels. Gabriel paused before sending herself into the open sky. "Good luck, exorcist."
Not waiting for Viola's response, the Archangel took flight and vanished. Vi inhaled deeply and exhaled long and slow. The strigoi were gone for now. The church had failed to excommunicate her. The angels hadn't come to punish or kill her. She was far from okay—far from whole—and, apparently, there were worse trials ahead. But God help her, because a bit of hellfire had ignited in her soul.
It made Viola want to burn something.
"What happened?!" Aaron shut his car door while Lana finally emerged from the safety of the backseat.
"I'll tell you on the drive." A tug at her soul made Viola turn and she peered down the open road. "'Cause we've got a demon to send home."
